Finally trip report from June part 1

Post by cat »

I know it has been a really long time since we got back and I would like to start out by apologizing to all of you for taking so long to do this! Editing all of the pictures got the better of me and I needed a break!

When my sister, Nothintolose suggested we go with she and her SO to St John we were so excited to be going back to our favorite vacation spot! They had stayed with us for a month after Katrina so we had no worries that we could live together for a week!

Let me start out by saying that hubby and I really needed this trip! It had been a really long time between trips and our love for travel was getting a little frustrated! The countdown to the trip was all consuming but the trip made it all worthwhile!

We started out on Wednesday driving from Lafayette, LA to Houston. We stayed at the Airport Inn by Bush International Airport. Wednesday night we went to Joe's Crab Shack and ate on the deck listening to a guy with a guitar to get us started on island time. Dinner was great and the Margaritas were flowing! We stopped by the mall to pick up a few things I had forgotten to pack and went back to the hotel to sleep. We had to be up at 4:30am to catch the 5am shuttle. I am NOT a morning person! It took the shuttle about 5 minutes to get us there! We left our car at the hotel.

We had an uneventful flight there and couldn't believe it when we stepped out of the plane. We are here!!!!!! Stopped to get our free drink on our way into the baggage terminal and sent hubby directly to the bar for more drinks while I waited in line for the ladies room! They need more bathrooms there! A Painkiller when I met up with him was just the thing I needed to wait for the luggage. We were on island time so there was no need to hurry for the luggage! I barely finished my drink and we were on our way to catch a taxi to Hotel Mafolie in St Thomas. Let me start by saying that I get really bad motion sickness and drive everywhere so as not to get sick. I had taken a Bonine just before we landed but still asked for the front seat. No problem as the rest of the taxi was full to the brim! The hotel was small friendly and perfect for one night. We turned on the AC and put on swimsuits to hit the pool! Great bartender at the pool and more painkillers!

We got a call from N saying that they had landed and how was the hotel! We had had a few more drinks by then and the world was a wonderful place! I told her that they had the room next to us and we had adjoining balconies! She was excited and couldn't wait to join us! We met them a little while later and helped them to their room. I had asked when I checked in about dinner at their restaurant and we asked again when N and her SO checked in again what time the restaurant closed and were told 10pm both times. At 9pm when we showed up the restaurant had been closed early but they suggested we walk up to Sib's for dinner. OK we are from the flat land down south and I do not hike uphill well! Besides that I was a little toasted to be walking anywhere but up the hill we went! It was dark and the girls go the giggles. We were so far behind the guys we couldn't help ourselves! I'm sure it wasn't really that far but it seemed like forever when we finally rounded the corner and saw it! Woo Hoo! It was a nice bar with really good calamari and burgers! Drinks were good too!

After dinner we hiked back down the hill and sat out on the patio for a little while before hitting the hay for the evening. The view of St Thomas was beautiful!

Tomorrow St John!

Sib's on the Mountain...just up the hill...yeah, RIGHT. I asked the lady at Mafolie if she was serious and pointed out that we were from flat land with NO hills. She said it wasn't far, so we expected it to be just around the corner...NOT.

I think we walked up about 4 to 5 STEEP hills in the pitch black dark most of the way. You should have seen Cat and myself running back and forth across the road to get out of cars' way

Great place once we got there still cracking up from our first adventure. Too bad they were closing for good later that week

Great job so far Cat - glad YOU are doing it as I don't know how to post pics. I will just comment along the way.

DAMN!! That calamari looks good!! Next time -- give us a "Food Porn Ahead" warning, otherwise we're caught off guard. Now I'm hungry!
