Silly Hurricane Question
Silly Hurricane Question
So, say there is a hurricane (and boy do I pray that there isn't for everyone's sake) but say there is & the house you have rented is not inhabitable. Are you still wedded to the rental or does the co. try to rebook you in another house or what?
I know this is a question best asked to the Rental agency perhaps but I just wonder how it works.
Again, hoping that there is NO significant hurricane or tropical storm damage to St John EVER.

OK – this is what you do.
Switch to plan “B” which includes:
Renting FlaGeorge’s house that is in Sunny Safe Florida. The villa (better known as a “House”) over looks a beautiful sub-division with breath-taking views of my neighbors backyards. Same heat and humidity as STJ – close your eyes and you’ll never know. Same bad roads as STJ and your get to drive on either side of the road – hell, your taxes pay for the whole road – why not use whatever side you want.
Beaches are a mere 8 miles away and like STJ will take you 45 min. to get to them. Unlimited cheap beer (Old Milwaukee’s Best) from my neighbor behind us.
Sound like a good plan “B” to me.
Just having some fun here – it’s a good question Flip Flop.

Check your contract. First off, if a hurricane is headed to the island on your date of arrival, all bets are off. Most Villa rental co's don't want you there and will contact you to tell you not to come or delay arrval. If one pops up while you're there you are required (in most cases) to vacate the premises and leave the island because they will secure the house, disconnect electricity, etc.
I don't have a contract in front of me right now, but I seem to recall that they hold your deposit and will work with you to reschedule your vacation at a later date if the house is damaged or in the event of a natural incident. I suppose they could work with you to try and find another home on island, but I would imagine that would be a challenge since other people may have reserved those homes (and are grateful that they are still standing) and chances are many more properties will have sustained damage as well.
Just my 2 cents.

Hurricane Cancellations
Just received my CVilla contract for July 2008 and I quote, "If you are traveling during hurricane season, CVillas highly recommends you purchase trip cancellation insurance. This insurance will cover you in the case of a natural disaster (please verify all terms and conditions with the insurance company). If you do not purchase hurricane insurance and if a hurricane is threatening St. John and we advise you not to travel, we will hold your villa balance on account for a future stay at the property reserved. We will not hold your balance on account if the hurricane is not a threat to St. John and you are unable to travel because of canceled flights. You will not be refunded for any of these circumstances. If you do not purchase insurance and are currently on island, if you chose to leave or are asked to depart the island early, you will not be refunded for the unused portion of your stay."
