Where is Jacob's Ladder??!!!

Post by ATG »

OK, we've driven all over STJ on numerous visits, and heard all about Jacob's Ladder, but never could figure out exactly where this hill is! Is it just that hill on the road to the Westin right after the gas station? Or is it some turn off of that main road?

You are correct. It is the hill on the way to the Westin, just beyond the gas station and Pine Peace Market.

Ok, if you keep going, you go up some really steep switchbacks with great views. What's that hill called? Doesn't it hook up w/ Centerline again?

Isn't that Gifft Hill Road? I think?
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

That is correct.

A comment on this forum was once made: "Why St Johnians honk their horns so much" - one reason - it is a good safety idea when you encounter switchbacks.

I am still confused and have wanted to ask this question for a while. How exactly do you get to houses on Gifft Hill? We ususally stay off Great Cruz Bay Road...would we just keep going toward Chocolate Hole on the "Westin Road" and find a turn off to Gifft??

That is one way to go, you can also access from Centerline although I'm not sure where you turn. If you have the atlas or a map I think you can also see the road listed as 104.

We were driving up Jacob's Ladder in February in the rain and slid down backwards as a dump truck slid down in the right lane. Hubs was level-headed enough pop it into 4WD Low and use the emergency brake as I screaked.

The drive up Gift Hill road is a definitely a trip. The drive down Gift Hill Rd was dangerous because I kept getting sidetracked by the gorgeous views!! :D We'd all say Wow! every morning when we made the trek down the road!

Gift Hill is more easily (IMHO) accessed from Centerline. Its a right turn just before you get to the Medical Center. There is a food truck on the right side of the road.

That lady at that truck is so nice! We got our ice there all of the time while staying at Seawatch this past June.

We always go up Jacob's Ladder in low gear and have never had a problem whether the road was wet or dry. When we stayed at Ristaba (right near the top of that road), we heard cars screeching on it all the time.

That way gets you to Gifft Hill too. You come to a place where you can go left out to Maria Bluff and all of that area or right up the steep curvy road to Gifft Hill. First time my younger sister (not Cat) followed us on it, she thought their car was gonna flip over backwards. I personally think THAT road is more scary than Jacob's Ladder. I also think the scariest part of Jacob's Ladder is when you get to the top and can't see the road below you for a second.

I highly recommend driving those roads as well as taking the Catherineburg road from Centerline to the North Shore Road...just for adventures
