Reef Bay Hike

Post by djmom »

We were thinking about doing the Reef Bay hike (if it isn't full). How hard is it?

We would have my husband and I and our two girls ages 6 and 9. We did the hike from Cruz Bay to Solomon, Honeymoon and on to Caneel last year and the kids were fine.

The thing that I am most worried about is the chance that the water is rough and we have to walk back up???That would be really bad. Does anyone know how often that happens?

And opinions on kids?

I think your kids will be fine.

When we did the walk in 2005, there was a wide age range from 4-ish to 80+ years old.

Can't offering any info on the risk of being stranded at the bottom.

It's ALL downhill, so should be a breeze. Some big rocks might trip ya up, but that's it. We got picked up by Sadie Sea when we did it, and I can't imagine anything but 4 foot seas bothering it. The cove is also a bit protected for the dingy that takes you out, but I just swam anyway.

My wife and I did it in 2005. It's not bad, a bit bouldery in some spots. I'm a hiker, so for me the trail was a piece of cake. Mr. B is right though, it's all downhill... so it could be all uphill too if you turn around, but like I said, it's not bad. Kids shouldn't have any problem in my opinion, theres no steep cliffs or anything dangerous like that.
I hope you have fun, have the kids look out for wandering hermit crabs!

When we did the hike in Feb., the ranger said the boat has only been cancelled twice in lots of years. You're right, though - I wouldn't want to hike back up....
