Car Question: Steering Wheel on Right or Left?

Post by chicagoans »

This question will show my newbie-ness

I was laughing with a friend today about our adventures driving in England in a stick shift, trying to shift with my left hand while navigating the round-abouts. Got me wondering...

I know you drive on the left on STJ, but I don't know if the steering wheels are on the right or the left side of the car? Not that it matters one way or the other, just wondering!

Thanks!

Steerling wheels on the left, just like in the US

We joke that it the first two or three turns we take upon return home are into the left lane.

I am not 100% sure of this fact, but I was told the reason for driving on the left is so the driver has a better idea of the location between the drop off edge of the road in relation to the vehicle in which they are driving. Which makes sense since there are a lot of very steep drop off points with no guard rails.
I also heard of a old West Indian tale about when the men went to town to drink rum on their return they fell asleep atop their donkeys. Donkeys always knew to walk on the left and got the man home safely.
Peace,

dunno but I kinda like my myth - or truth - or whatever best ...

In Merry ol' and days of old with knights and their respective jousting tournaments, they passed so that their right hand could easily hold the lance and wipe out the opponent since most were right-handed. Thus today we still keep our "shoulder to the shoulder" or our shot-gunner screams "LEFT! LEFT!" Hopefully, today, it has little to do with wiping out those coming at us but sometimes I wonder!

cliffs... donkeys... jousting... great reasons/myths for the left hand driving! I'll just focus on staying left, and avoiding those cliffs and donkeys (and any jousters who may be coming my way!)

Thanks!
