Funny, you call tell the "live here" and the "visit here" folks by the things they think St. John needs.
Basically all St. John needs is a functional government that cares about St. John's residents

I think it's "funny" that you read the replies and came to that conclusion.

I came to the exact same conclusion -- and St John had
LESS
for a long long time and it was the new villa visitors and non resident rental home owners who created the demand for more of everything 'just like at home'.

"demand for more of everything 'just like at home'."
Something I will never understand. Traveling to other places but expecting everything to be just like home.
We travel to see places that are different to experience a lifestyle that is different. I don't want or expect A/C or fine dining in the Caribbean. I would like a transportation system of some sort that works so no visitor needs to rent a jeep when a ride and a pair of hiking shoes will work but only if visitors would use it and not add the 700 jeeps/day to the island footprint. I'm not talking subway or EL train. I expect not to flush the toilet until absolutely necessary, I like using the ocean for my daily shower, I do not want to check the internet to find out the weather outside my door or have the need to post pictures on instagram real-time, no cell signal required till I get home, I liked not being able to use a credit card on the island. I travel to the virgins BECAUSE it is on island time, not to try to change it. I miss it.

I agree with Exit Zero, toes, and fbo44. Any way to preserve the place we all love and protect the reefs and their inhabitants would be great. If that means curtailing my own ability to soak in a hot tub, dip in a pool, or have easy access to niceties, I'm good with that.
