Lameshur

Post by nancyr84 »

We are on island now and I thought about trying Lameshur . I cannot figure out the difference in getting to Little Lameshur and Greater Lameshur. Can you easily walk from one to another? I would like to snorkle both but no rock scrambling for me with my bum knee.

nancy, after you continue past salt pond bay parking pavement will end at rocky dirt continuation up a hill. follow and rd becomes concrete for ways with couple of switchbacks and then ends in flat area with canopy over rd. 1st beach on left is great lam, beach is very rocky. keep going along rd for ways past sign for yawtzi pt to left and you will arrive at little l which has a sandy beach. you know you've arrived when you see the portolet on your right. there's couple of picnic tables and a good bit of shade along beach this time if year. waters usually very calm.

enjoy but be prepared for a bumpy ride after you get off concrete rd.

You can certainly walk the road between the 2 beaches. I believe there is a trail to Yawsi Point but I have never been on it. Based on what I saw I wouldn't try anything but the road if you have a bum knee. We had a nice snorkle at Little Lameshur last week. As papbou said, the road is "bumpy". Make sure you have an empty bladder before navigating it :D

Great Lameshur is a rocky beach. The rocks are dark and REALLY soak up the heat from the sun. If visiting on a sunny day I would suggest that you do Great Lameshur early then Little Lameshur later if you plan to spend time on the beach. Definitely do NOT try GL beach without shoes. Both beaches are difficult to find shade. LL has a few shady spots but you have to be lucky or early to get those spots. Perhaps best if you get to LL early, find a shady spot then walk to GL before the rocks heat up. Parking is mostly in shade and there is a porta potty at LL parking area.
Also, bring bug spray if you are going to spend time on LL in the shade.

Good points toes. We got to Little Lameshur early and got a shady spot. We didn't have problems with bugs the day we were there though. Even on the sandy beach on LL we had to be careful of the "nettles" for lack of a better term. We stepped on a few while there. They are little balls of burrs that stick to your skin. They pull out easy enough with no lasting problem but they certainly hurt when you step on them. We have encountered them on Salt Pond too.
