Re: What's on your Play List??
Another vote for Zac Brown band. I'm not much of a country music girl - but they have so many songs that are just totally St John to me.
Also love some Van Morrison, Marley and Innervisions in my mix.

Good Morning.... Great thread!
I am going to be checking out music all day..
A lot of intriguing suggestions.
I don't know if he is "island music" or not ( he is from Hawaii ) but I really enjoy Jack Johnson.

He's my new favorite..
and of course, Bob Marley, Kenny C., and Zac Brown will always mean the islands to me...

Re: What's on your Play List??
Hey jmq, that's an awesome and pretty eclectic list. It's crazy how many of these songs or artists are on my own very, very long list.
I'd play along and add my own list, except that would turn into a long, time consuming project. The next time I'll have that kind of time is when I'm on island this summer, but good luck getting me to do anything that productive then.
Anyone who has the subdudes and the Radiators on their list has got to be OK.
Bet you know how to party, too.

Don't think I saw it on here, but for your last night on island you have to add Jerry Jeff's "Cowboy Boots and Bathing Suits".

Re: What's on your Play List??
We used to go through the whole thing about choosing music to take down each time - first with cassettes, then Cds - but since my wife got me an ipod 3 years ago, everything has changed. I don't really think it terms of "island" music, though there is certainly some of that on there. What I do now is create 3 separate playlists for each trip - one of vocal tunes, one of instro tunes and one of live music. Most of the choices are driven by whatever was purchased since the last trip. The vocal stuff gets listened to mostly on the plane ride to and from; the instro stuff gets played primarily when reading and the live stuff is for driving/playing around. I'll add anywhere from 6-12 albums per playlist, so the plain fact is, I still have stuff on there from the first trip made with the ipod - which just happened to be STJ 2012 - that I probably haven't played yet. At this point, there are more albums on the ipod than I took with me when I went to college 40 years ago - and I had what was considered a pretty big collection then.
I enjoy reading all these lists - it's fun to see how important a role tunes play in the whole vacation experience. Thanks!

Re: What's on your Play List??
Great Feedback everybody!!!
The only sense more powerful then sound is scent...but both are profound in creating memories. As a marketing guy that has used sound for 30+ years to anchor any favorable stimuli...is it any wonder why that that 'go to' song will create the happy or sad memory. We even 'hear' when we are not listening....hence why we know lyrics(sometimes the wrong lyrics) to songs we never studied...but know by heart.
Time for a new thread on the scent that brings you back to the island....

Re: What's on your Play List??
Hey DrToons (great handle) thanks for props. Over the years we have done this playlist thing so I had much of it already in typed list form, just had to update it.
Variety is the spice of life when it comes to music, no? And, I might have even been turned onto the Subdudes and Radiators by some folks here if memory serves.
Re your party guess, I've done my share and rarely pass up a chance to do so For example, last time on island, I was taking some photos at one of the north shore overlooks and a vehicle pulled up in a cloud of smoke with a bunch of 20 somethings in it. I was entertained by that and gave them a friendly nod which prompted them to ask "want some medicine?" so we passed that around LOL. They were island newbies so they were asking me for recommendations etc. Another only on St. John story for me

I just bought an i pod, thanks for all the suggestions.
The Subdudes have a St.John connection. John Magnie of the Subdudes is the father of Bo, of Lauren and Bo. The Subdudes have a short tour schedule planned starting in a few weeks with the original line up.

Re: What's on your Play List??
Never really thought of having an island playlist, just bring my iPod and play what's on it. After reading your responses I'm wondering if I need to add some different music to mine . I like anything from rap to Bruno Mars. I really can't stand country music (and I'm from MS, go figure), but Kenny's island-ish songs are starting to grow on me. I enjoy reggae when I'm in the Caribbean, but usually listen to the local stations for that.
