Upside down boat in Leinster Bay
Upside down boat in Leinster Bay
Just returned home from walking the girls and there is a boat upside down in Leinster Bay. The fire department arrived to take a look and I spoke with them (at first I couldn’t tell if it was a very small plane or a boat because of the angle) and they confirmed it was a boat but no one had called it in and there was nothing they could do nor anyone they could call because (in their words) “we are closed”. Hoping no one was trapped underneath.

I just called the Park Emergency number - they were not aware of it but said they will check it out - I told them the Fire Department knew about it.

Scary. I'd like to think whatever limited resources there are due to furloughs would focus on this more than kicking people off the beaches. Please keep us posted.

I am surprised that the fire department said: "We are closed." That makes no sense...the fire department is not a part of the National Parks. Besides, shouldn't this be a Coast Guard issue?
Were they saying that the Coast Guard is all on furlough? That's really scary.

What ended up happening? Is the boat still there?

We drove by last night on the way into Cruz bay and it was still there. This morning around 10am I walked my dogs back down the road to see and there was a National Park boat there with a snorkeler in the water - I watched for about 20 minutes and then left - he must have been exhausted as he would surface take in air and then dive again. There was one other crew on the boat that he would communicate to before diving.
