What do you tip for a day trip or half day trip?

Post by ArkieLovesSTJ »

We are headed to STJ in a little less than 3 weeks. On our previous two trips, we stayed on STJ the entire time. While we still have some trails and some beaches to explore, we have hit most of the "have to" places.

This time we are considering doing some type of day or half day trip. We have seen and read all kinds of suggestions for who to go with and where to go (the Baths, Norman Island, The Indians, etc.). What we haven't seen is a suggestion on how much to tip for a snorkeling trip.

What is your suggested tip amount for a full day trip and/or a half day trip?

20% of the charter cost in either case.

On a full day trip, I would also buy lunch for the captain if you all stop to eat at a restaurant.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

For the past two years, we have booked day trips on the Kekoa. We sail to a few snorkeling spots and then head to Jost for lunch and "refreshments". It is one of the highlights of our trip - especially last year when we watched a mother whale and it's calf playing not more then 100 yards from the boat. :) We already have our next Kekoa trip booked! :D

For a full day trip, the usual tip is $20 per person. The boat crew works really hard to provide you with a great day.

iheartsstj - imo you are a little incorrect (I book excursions including boat trips for a living)

The "correct" amount (if there is such a thing) is considered to be 15% to 20% of the trip total not including gas or customs therefore if you are on Breakaway (for example) where the cost is $150.00 per person the "correct" tip would be between $22.50 and $30.00 per person. If you are on a half day where the average cost is $70.00 per person then $10.50 to $14.00 per person would be appropriate - more is always appreciated and of course tipping should be for good service and adjusted accordingly.

Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking it should be in the 15% to 20% range.
