Gate by the Westin blocking access to Virgin Grand homes

Post by HughA »

Many years ago on our first trip to St John we stayed in one of the only two-three houses in what was called Virgin Grande and going up that road at the Westin was the only way to get to it. I know times have certainly changed dramatically in that area and now apparently you have to go all the way up to centerline to get to any of those homes. Does anyone know if it's possible to get permission to use that gate?
Thanks for any info.

You won't get permission! Access from the Westin end hasn't been open since the Westin bought the property years ago. The Virgin Grand Villas are private property and can only be accessed from Gift Hill end. Can you imagine if the gate was down, how many cars would travel the "short cut"? Sorry to rain on your parade but this is the skinny.

I certainly understand no one would want it to become a short cut but I was just wondering if you had a house booked there could you, or ,ore ;ikely your rental company, be given the combination.

Nope. It's Westin private property. You can still use it as a foot path from VGE down to the Westin though.

At one time, the Virgin Grand Hotel, which is now the Westin, owned the property where the houses were built. They originally envisioned these houses having use of the Virgin Grand Hotel property, just as the Westin timeshares do now. When the Westin took over or bought the Virgin Grand Property, which includes the area where the timeshares are located, the conveyance or purchase did not include the lots in the Virgin Grand Estates, so access through the property now owned by the Westin was closed, as if it were a dead end road.

Thanks for the replies. I was pretty much aware of most of this info but the reason I asked the question was that a couple of years ago we met a family on the beach who were staying in one of the original houses in VGE and they had been given a combination to the gate for their use. I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was some unspoken understanding regarding this or had had a similar experience.

That combo would be for the entry gate off Gift Hill Road. You need to have a code to enter. During the day it is often left open but in the evening it is locked. If you are staying at one of the houses in the VG Estates, don't forget to ask for the code.
