Niagara Falls

Post by jayseadee »

We're thinking of taking a long weekend to the falls. We're planning to fly into Buffalo and renting a car.

Will this work if we want to go to the Canadianu side.

Any suggestions for hotels?

We did this a couple of years ago. Rented a car at Buffalo airport, no problems with border or customs at all.

We stayed at Hilton w/ view of the falls. Big hotel, big $$, lots of people, very crowded, the falls are absolutely stunning! Everyone should visit, kinda on the scale with the Grand Canyon, IMO. Recommend Maid of the Mist, to get up close, it feels like a 6 Flags ride while you are herded through the line, but well worth it.

We left the falls and spent more time a little north at Niagara on the Lake. Much more to our liking, less people, less touristy, more charming and still beautiful. Spent one day visiting wineries in the area. Loved, loved, LOVED the ice wine! We brought as many bottles back that we could legally. Would love to go back just for the wine.

Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks for the info.

I am looking into hotels with views of the falls.

Is Niagara on the Lake a day trip from the falls? I'll have to look into that. I figure will have about 2 1/2 days to get it all in.

Niagara on the Lake isn't far at all, I can't remember the drive time but short enough that, looking back on it, I wished we would have stayed up on the lake and day tripped to the falls. It is lovely in that region.

Years ago, we stayed at the Sheraton Fallsview and had a 4th floor room with a balcony, it was fantastic.

Our office manager just returned and she stayed close to the falls but she said they were so high up (20th) floor that the only way she could see the falls was to stand right against the window and look down. Just mentioning it as she said it wasn't the view she was expecting.

Seeing Niagara Falls is one of those events long remembered.

In July 2008, we spent two nights in that same Hilton on the Canadian side, arriving late afternoon on a Saturday and following a drive down from Toronto. The hotel was fine with an easy walk down the hill to the falls; the room was fine with a view of a casino; we only ate one breakfast there which as not exceptional.
We took off for the falls as soon as we were checked in, finding the sidewalks and area overlooking the falls totally packed wall to wall with people; squeezing in for a view, we agreed that the falls must be spectacular. We were up and peering over those falls at seven the next morning and hardly saw a soul, and the falls were indeed spectacular.

Within a few hours we were on the way to Niagara-on-the-Lake which was less than an hour's drive down the fairly scenic Niagara Parkway. We had brunch at an old inn, ran into friends from home, toured one ice wine vineyard, ate dinner, AND attended a Shaw play (where we ran into our friends again), put down the top and drove back to Niagara Falls under the moon and stars... one of the best days ever! I highly recommend a visit there and I hope to go back!

There are many "touristy" activities in Niagara Falls; no doubt, you could spend all your time there, but Niagara-on-the-Lake is a lovely, small, old town with plenty of B&Bs, inns, restaurants, and the many wineries are easily accessed. If you like theater, the annual Shaw Festival fills that slot nicely. I have added a few websites.
I agree with PA Girl... I would stay in Niagara-on-the-lake and visit the falls from there.

Have a wonderful time north of the border!

Niagara on the Lake is merely a 30-45 minute drive north. A scenic route along the river, with a couple of attractions worth stopping for - the River Walk, where you ride an elevator down and walk a scenic boardwalk at the river's edge, passing white rapids. The elevator car can be crowded, but once you reach the boardwalk, it does not feel so congested, as folks stroll the lovely, wooded boardwalk. Also, you should stop at the whirlpool, where the river has to make a 90 degree turn and actually makes a natural loop up into a whirlpool. Quite an amazing natural phenomenon. There are even boat rides (jet boats I think) up into the whirlpool, adventuresome thrill seekers like, not our cup of tea! We enjoyed watching. lol

There is currently a deal being offered at Sinique Away for an inn located in Niagara on the Lake. Rooms that usually rent for $285 are being offered for $169 per night.
