Ferry drop-off/pick-up & updated books

Post by AquaGirl »

We are starting to pack for our trip to STJ in May and talking about it. Our last trip was in 2009, and we seem to recall that we got yelled at by a taxi driver when we were either picking up, or dropping off people at the ferry dock. We also recall some comments on the forum about the possibility of getting a ticket in that area. So....my question is about the rules. Can my husband pull up in the area right at the end of the ferry dock to pick me up or drop me off with luggage? If not right there, then where can one stop for a couple minutes to pick up someone?

We pulled out our STJ books and maps - it was fun to peruse them with my marked up notes. Our STJ Beach Guide is from 2003, and my husband wants to get the newer version. We noticed that "Feet, Fins, etc" was updated in 2009 and we have the 2003 version. We have been to STJ 3 times, but still have plenty of exploring and things we want to do. Has anyone bought the more recent version and do you think it has a lot of new/different info?

Thanks!

The dock is tricky. What I recommend is that you go around by the post office, and not down the one way street by Connections. Pull up by the taxis, drop your stuff, and get out of dodge quickly :) DO not park in those spots along the water.
Make sure that you are not getting there when all the taxis are trying to leave from the previous ferry, that will cause some frustration on everyone's part.

And don't stop near the Spice steps. We just escaped a ticket there.

You cannot drive 'straight' from the one way road that leads to the ferry dock where Connections front door is faced. This is a one way/do not enter, posted with signs and you can be ticketed.

You cannot park in the spots at the ferry dock entrance that are marked 'BUS' or 'POLICE'

You cannot park in any of the spots closest to the ferry dock that are reserved for Taxis (unless you have a handicap parking permit, you can park there if you have a permit)

If you are waiting for your husband with your luggage, he can get the car and drive around the block (past the post office, past the clinic/bandstand) and he can back into the spot by the ferry dock if it is open and load up and drive off. Stopping to the far right, in front of taxis that are not loaded up and departing, briefly while you load your luggage should be perfectly fine.

OR, if you want to, you and your hubby can wheel your luggage down to the public parking lot by customs and the public restroom, he can go get the car, drive it to the lot and load up there. It's lest congested, and sometimes easier that way.
