SF is my favorite city to play tourist:
Ride the trolleys, go to Alcatraz (make reservations), stroll/eat around Fisherman's Wharf (had my first chowdah in a bread bowl here:), hot fudge Sundae at Ghiaradelli's, Sausalito, Muir Woods (maybe an hour or so drive), eat seafood, see the Golden Gate bridge (boat, walk, bike, drive), Lombard Street, visit Chinatown
I think someone here on the forum visited in the last year or 2, do a search you might find other tips.
I haven't been back in the last 5 or so years, but my favorite restaurants (no guarantee they still exist or are still good): Scoma's (Fisherman's wharf) and Stinking Rose (North Beach area).
Enjoy.

Walk through the Fairmont Hotel lobby and down to the lower level to the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar!
Have a sunset coctail at The Top of the Mark
Visit Golden Gate Park and don't miss the California Science Center and Steinhart Aquarium!
Eat at Fisherman's Wharf
Get some Ghiradelli Chocolate
Get some sourdough bread!
Take a jacket even if you think it's going to be warm...the wind blowing off the water is very chilly!
Last, but not least, HAVE FUN!!!

Farmer's market at the Ferry building/plaza! Lots of amazing food stalls (the Ferry building itself is cool too and has some nice little shops & restaurants). Tues, Thurs, and Sat.

Hey, thanks for all the great ideas. Now that I've been out there to see my 29 year old daughter, I have to tell you why. She was mugged, assualted, pretty bad. She was standing outside a well known restaurant waiting for a friend and a 6ft dude tried to grab her smart phone. She held on to it, and he picked her up by the throat (now she's 5' 2" and 115 lbs) and threw her to the concrete sidewalk. As she struggled to get up in front of a crowd of people, she saw his fist cocked to her face. The waitress heard her screaming and came out and helped her into the restaurant and the police were called. They didn't catch him and he stoll a cell phone from a girl two blocks away. Tracy didn't give up her cell which may have been foolish. But her bruises have gotten better and we all learned a good lesson on not being on your cell and distracted. It's a huge new crime, they sell your phone 2 blocks away for $400 or ship them overseas. Lesson learned. No one has cash on them anymore and cells are the latest hit and run. Google it and you'll learn.
