Watch your expiring FF miles

Post by jmq »

We havent used AA in awhile - other airlines have been cheaper to fly to our destinations of choice lately.

Was looking to book a rental car for an upcoming trip and saw a suggestion to use FF miles for it. So looked at my bank of miles over at AA (not a lot and unlikely to grow significantly soon) and saw they would expire in June, so I used them to book the car, cutting the out of pocket cost by 2/3.

This only works with the handful of national companies they work with so wouldnt apply to most renters in the VIs, but could be useful for other destinations.

Also note that you can reboot your expiration with ANY activity.
From the AA website:
"All you need to do is earn or redeem miles on American Airlines, AmericanConnection, American Eagle, or an AAdvantage participant at least once every 18 months, and your mileage expiration date will automatically be extended for an additional 18 months from the date of your most recent account activity."

Most folks reading this might know this stuff already, but for those who didnt (like me), just thought I would share.

We did the same thing. Used some leftover miles to get a car when we went to Florida in Feb to visit my sister.
We used to use AA miles to go down to StJ but since they have raised the amount needed it just doesn't work for us.

Loving my ticker!!!!
