Missed these Reef Sandals in the Sandals Thread

Sandal's Secret: A Hidden Flask

Sean Carroll (Rochester, N.Y.) -- File this under, "What are they going to think of next?"

At first glance, it's tough to tell exactly what's different about these sandals. A closer look, a twist or two, and suddenly you've figured it out.

A company is now selling a sandal that can hold an ounce of your favorite drink. The sandal's secret has some parents and teachers on the lookout for kids choosing to use it in the wrong way.

“A drink? That's disgusting,” Erin Talamo said.

Larry Salamone said, "So like, for concert goers or people in the park?"

The tag on Reef's newest sandal doesn't hide the fact that this secret compartment could be used as a walking flask.

“Do I think this is geared toward young kids? Yeah. Probably,” Salamone said.

Even a teenager admits he'd try some sandal smuggling.

Ryan Maslyn said, "I would try it once. If I liked it, I'd try it more. I'd try it though for sure."

Cindy Geller's store is one of the first to sell this secret sandal.

“It's 45, 46 dollars so it's a little pricey for a young individual, and we are a destination shop so we don't get many 16-year-olds unless they're with their parents,” she said.

“I definitely wouldn't pay 46 bucks," Maslyn said.

The question is, would you drink out of this?

“It’s kind of gross, no,” Salamone said. "It would get all warm, wouldn't it?"

"No. No I honestly wouldn't because I think it's gross," Talamo said.

As far as minors using these to fill with alcohol, at least one parent-teacher group and another local school district have already sent out memos to teachers and parents.

Obviously there's concern they could be used for the wrong purpose.

It’s not the first time Reef has made such a product. A couple years ago, they made a sandal with a bottle-opener on the bottom. They also have a sandal that can hold a car key or credit card.

I gave my husband a pair for his 50th birthday. He says they are very comfy.

Call me paranoid but I would make sure not to wear those through airport security. Can you say "full body cavity search"?

So how many ounces does it hold?

Those are cool! I just bought my husband some Reefs that have a bottle opener on the bottom. You have given me a Father's day idea!
