Trip Report - Day 3 - Birthday Boy

Post by Hawaii »

We all were awake pretty early this morning. It was our son's 14th birthday and his pick of which beach he wanted to try. Since we were off to a early start he picked Trunk. We were there by 8:40 and the first ones on the beach. What a beautiful beach and very nice when not crowded. While we were driving there was a short rain shower which made the roads a bit slippery. I was still not quite use to the tires squealing as we went around the sharp turns - I must need a drink  When we got to trunk we snorkeled for a bit and the kids saw a sting ray which they thought was cool. We then walked down to the snorkel trail and did this which was very nice since this was only our 3rd day.

After a while it got really hot. I am not sure if we were just getting tired or maybe we needed a drink  It started to get a bit busy but not overly crowded so our son wanted to go to another beach - it was his birthday and we really did not care so off to his next beach of choice. Yes, he wanted to revisit Maho which was fine with all of us. We found a parking spot and went right to snorkeling but did not find a thing. The water was clear and weather perfect but no fish to be found. We still had a great time relaxing and snorkeling. We left to go back to the villa as this was his birthday and we wanted to relax in the pool for a bit before dinner.

ok - I am still trying to figure out Picasa and I have more pictures but will not post until I figure out how to do it. Our son is over a friends house tonight so am out of luck. Anyway, tonight was our son's 14th birthday and after much research and forum help I decided on Aqua Bistro for his birthday dinner.

The trip advisor reviews and help from everyone else convinced me to try Aqua Bistro. Ok - I am going to try to be kind here. The service was just ok if that, the food was good and the ambiance pretty great. Our 14 year old was not impressed and either were we. I liked the music but it just did not impress me. Maybe my expectations were too high but my family knew nothing about this place and they were just ok with it. I guess what turned us off was when our son received his meal and proceeded to put pepper on his meal. The pepper shaker was broken and it all came on top of his meal. The waitress was like oh, do you want another or should I clean it off. We do not like to complain so we said if you can clean it off that will be fine. It still came back with lots of pepper. Don't get me wrong, the food was good just not great and they just did not seem to care that he had pepper all over His food which is not his fault. Adam decided he did not want to stay for dessert and wanted to try somewhere else. We ended up at Skinny's but it was really crowded and kinda scared me with all the motorcycles and lots of rowdy people. We did end up back here for lunch one day which was great. Off we went to try to find somewhere for dessert. We ended up buying a half gallon of ice cream and eating at our villa.

It was a great birthday day and if I had to do dinner over again I am sad to say would not choose Aqua Bistro. I know all of you out there have raved about this restaruant and maybe we just hit it on a bad night but the service was just ok no one checked on us after our mishap with the pepper and when you are paying good money for a good meal I expect more - sorry. I have to say if we go back I will try the bar and the tables around the bar for maybe an appetizer as we did really like the ambiance.

I will try to post more pictures tomorrow once I figure out how to do the Picasa 3 to make them better.

Coden - I would still give them a try. From all the reviews I have read on trip advisor I think maybe we just hit a bad night. It was not bad just not great like the meals at Shipwreck. Give them a try and then let me know and then we will have an excuse to return again. :D

Hawaii - we probably will, but with hesitation. The last time we were there they must have been having kitchen help problems, because the few tables that had customers sitting at them were not getting served, and we waited for over 30 mins to even be shown to a table. Which never happened so we walked down to Island Blues and had a great dinner.

Great trip report. Sorry about your time at Aqua Bistro, it is our favorite. We do make a point of talking with the Chef (MJ) He is a great guy and I can't imagine him allowing one of his dishes to have dumped pepper on it. Wait staff goes in and out of those places though, and that could have been your problem. We usually go to dinner early and thus avoid the rush as well. We are old resturant people and try to avoid the "majic hour" (6-7). Talking to the person who fixes your food does not hurt. We did this at the Fatty Crab and were really pleased as well. Of course I just like connecting with people. Like I have said so many times " talking is my favorite sport!"

Please do not get me wrong about Aqua Bistro it was not a bad meal just did not knock our socks off. We went early and there was only two other people in the sitting area where we were at the time. When my son went to put pepper on his meal it was broke and went all over but they did clean it up as best they could and he did eat the remainder of his meal - our son loves to eat so had no problem doing this. I am not sure if MJ was even there. Does he work every day? We went on a Sunday. We could have asked for another plate but I told them it would be fine if they just cleaned it up.

Everyone has their favorite places what I like might not be what someone else likes. I definitely would not give them a bad rating. Even at home when we have a meal that is not great we sometimes go back and give it another try and are happy the 2nd time. Hey, we were on STJ and loved our time even at Aqua Bistro. The drinks there were wonderful.
