July 4th on STJ

Post by sea-nile »

I know this has been asked before and I tried to search with no luck. So here is the question again.

What is it like on STJ July 4th and the week surrounding it? We are planning a trip then so I just wanted to know. Is it crowded? Is there anything that you suggest that we do or avoid? Are beaches, restaurants etc. crowded? Is anything closed on the 4th?
Thanks!

We were there on the 4th this year for the first time. Cruz Bay is more or less closed to traffic most of the day. We got lucky with a parking space on the south side of the Beach Bar early that morning and never moved it again until after the fire works.

We did a dive with Low Key that afternoon. We tried to watch the parade, but it was like watching paint dry. I am sure that it is a wonderful parade, but it moves so slowly. We saw the start before we went out on the boat, and almost caught the end of the parade when we got back.

I did not notice anything that was closed (except the streets) during their regular hours. We ate supper at Cactus Blue. There were lots of people on the streets, but we had no wait for a table. In fact, a party of about 12 came in as we were leaving and they were seated withing minutes.

Tracy invited us up to the Grand Bay pool deck to watch the fire works. I was an outstanding show. They stage it in one of the car ferries anchored just northwest of Stevens Cay.

We went about our normal activities all week with the exceptions noted above. It was a great week to be on STJ.

Our last three trips were the week of the 4th...VERY fun lots going on...we didn't go to the parade this year but went the two prior times...if you have younger children theres fun stuff for them to do..lots of music in the streets, food and vendors...just a very fun time on island...

We have been a few times during the 4th- love it! It is a bit more crowded, but not unbearable- we have always been able to get around and into restaurants/on beaches. But def don't plan on driving in Cruz Bay on the 4th as said- most roads shut down for the parade. We usually walk from Woody's (the end of the parade route) to Mongoose (the beginning) so we see the whole parade, but a little faster, then hang out at Mongoose while it finishes.... Fireworks that night from the beach in front of BB are great! Kids love the parade. We usually head home right after the fireworks to avoid any potential hard core partying- haven't seen that. We are going back again next year after missing the last few years- looking forward to it!
