St. John the first time - again - Day 5

Post by kvhstjohn »

Day 5 - Saturday, July 2, 2011

We are determined to get to Haulover North again this year. If you recall we discovered it last year and fell in love with it. We have already tried (unsuccessfully :( ) to get there this trip, but it was really rough so we didn't go in. Today we give it another shot. It is still a little rough, but everyone is game to give it a try. The visibility isn't very good (probably due to runoff from the torrential rains yesterday). We head West along the shoreline. It seems the further out you get the better the coral and sealife, but also the rougher. We say a huge Puffer fish, a turtle

and tons of fish, but not nearly as much as last year when we snorkeled here.

Just goes to show that you just never know what you are going to see and just because you were disappointed in a site one time, doesn't mean you should never go back. We decide to also snorkel to the east. It is quite a long trip around to the other side, but definitely interesting. When you get way along the East side, the reef slopes quite drastically. It was a whole different kind of snorkel. Reminded me a little (just a little  ) of wall diving in Grand Cayman. We did spot a spotted eel that was not very excited to have his picture taken. Plus, he was in fairly deep water so I had to free dive to take a picture - that never works well for me.

After about a two hour lunch break we decide to head back to Pelican Rock. It was faily calm, but again the visability not nearly as good as when we snorkeled it 3 days ago. I did see a small brown eel swimming though the water. Of course, by the time I got my camera ready, he was hiding in a rock. I also spotted a nurse shark on this snorkel.

As we were getting ready for one of our snorkels, a lady stops and asks "What's up with all the duct tape on the toes?" We tell her a wind-surfer friend had said that's what they use to keep from getting blisters on their toes. Since we snorkel so much and usually have the blisters to prove it) we decided last year to give it a try. It really does work well. Stays on a lot better than bandaids and you aren't always dealing with wet sandy socks. Anyway, The lady that asked about them said she'd heard that people put duct tape on their feet to remove warts, so I guess she thought our family had recently had a bad outbreak of warts" . Thereafter, the men referred to the three of us as "The Wart Sisters".

Tomorrow: Even the goats seek shelter from the rain.

I was waiting until the end to comment. Loving your reports and the duct tape story is hysterical! Yes, it is used for wart removal. That's so funny, that someone asked!
Keep up the awesome reports :)
