This is killing me. The more that they bring the east/ west mainland USA shore to STJ the less I want to keep going back. Just saying...

I agree! when I think of St. John I think understated and natural. Ugly as it is I would expect them to put something plastic on a place like Panama City Beach or Miami, but STJ! That is rediculous. Is there a way to protest it?

They r a pretty typical design, I'm sure they give the lifeguards more protection from the sun and a more secure place to store their gear and belongings. I would be interested to hear the lifeguards perspective.

C'mon people, lighten up a little. Those life guards are there for your protection and safety, why not afford them some protection and safety as well? And why not throw in a little comfort to boot?

Or just get rid of the life guards altogether, then next time someone is in trouble or is standing on the coral....yell "CHOCOLATE".......that will get somebody's attention

Maybe instead of having a forum gathering at the Beach Bar, we could all meet at Trunk and bring some cans of green spray paint. If we gave those suckers a nice coat of paint and put a thatch roof on them, they just might be tolerable.

They look awesome for the lifeguards, especially if they're air conditioned. But to me.... it's a totally "War Of The Worlds" look! Run for your life!

I agree on the thatched roof & green spray paint! Might help!

I see those things as being indicative of more of the general excess of this society that many of us have come to despise. I can't help but wonder how much each of these clubhouses cost, as I figure that these are paid for with tax dollars. Gee, why don't they go ahead and make them air-conditioned while they're at it? You know, for the life guard's comfort and all. I not only don't like the look of them on a National Park shoreline, I think that the bureaucrat that approved them should be relived of their authority to make such asinine decisions.

Maybe a good old fashioned STJ paint job would make them look a little better. Some like this, maybe:

I'm with you Bert.Why all the grief about providing these hard working lifeguards with a safe comfortable place to work, which provides them with a better vantage point to keep us all safe!

Here's some examples of Jersey-style life guard stands. Picture credit for the third pic (Cape May) is to jmq.The Cape May chair differs from the Avalon chairs in that it's painted red. There were probably discussions about it. They may be ongoing.

I posted this same thing on the poll thread.
While we may not like they look, they are for the lifeguards comfort while they are watching out for those in distress. If they like them, I like them.

There are plenty of other things in the world for me to get all up in arms about. Lifeguard stations on a beach are not one of them!

OK, lifeguards are there to save your life and they should be comfortable, but those things are UGLY!

I'm really curious as to how much these things cost, so I've been trying to find out, to no avail, so far. I've been stunned with how expensive even a metal life guard chair can cost.Some that I found, were over $5000.00 just for a chair, sans umbrella. So I'm wondering, are these new stations $30,000? 40,000? More? At what price do they become too much? I have no qualms with the lifeguards being safe. I don't particularly like the look of these things either, but that's not why I'm griping. With our economy teetering on the possible brink of disaster, I just see these things as being fiscally irresponsible.
Does anybody know how to find out how much the Park paid for them?

It is a lifeguard stand on one beach on STJ. I don't really care for it either, but it is not the demise of the island or the National Park Service.

I have found the solution to the problem of the ugly lifeguard stands. I won't go to Trunk. There, take that VINP and your ugly stand!
