Trip Report: Day 1 Travel and Day 2 Cinnamon Bay

Post by JJShaw »

Up at 3 am after not going to bed til almost 2..But It always seems that way we me...Ive known since Oct. we would be leaving this day and leave it up to me to still be running around getting last minute "I need to do this" things taken care of. I think part of it is Im scared I'll over sleep or forget something...I have the greatest fear of getting to the airport and realizing I left the passports...meds...or something of great importance at home.

We live about 2 hrs from Myrtle Beach and needed to be there by 6. We stopped at the Awful Waffle and had breakfast. Arrived at the airport right on time...got checked in and started thru security. My son and I got pulled to the side...as we each were carrying about 35 to 40 batteries. I guess they have come across alot stranger things...none the less we explained they were for a battery operated fan and we were camping and we on our way. Flights were uneventful and no delays...I have to say as a side note...I know alot of folks do not like Spirit...but honestly...we have never had any problems with them..we did not purchase seats except for the flight from Ft Lauderdale to STT , This was my sons first time on STJ and I wanted him to have good seats on the way down...well, that got messed up...I went to customer service and asked about it...We ended up getting better seats than what we had...so NP...flight on time...and great seats to boot !! I had used airlmiles for these tickets. I paid 30.00 for the tickets..(2 rnd trip) I think they over charged me by 10.00 but I wasnt going to complain...we also checked 2 bags which brought my total up to 162.00 for 2 round trip tickets and 2 checked bags and 2 seats. Not a bad deal for a round trip flight to STT.

We arrived right on time and collected our rum shot, and headed to the taxis after getting our bags. About the time I get sat down...someone poked their head in the taxi and said "Hi"...It was Barb Y..she arrived abt the time we did and recognized us from a previous meeting at the BB in 07...It was great to see her, I think we were all excited just to be there...:) We bumped into the several times during the week..I could tell they were having a blast..:) We manage to catch the 4pm ferry

Being that we were staying at baresite in Cinnamon Bay we decided once we hit Cruz Bay to head on to Cinnamon Bay before they closed. I was a bit surprised to feel the humidity wasnt as bad as I had thought it would be...I know its been miserable here in Eastern NC. I thought it would have been terrible there...(hence all the batteries) We arrived and were checked in and got the first camping spot I had requested ( you have to pic 3 when you reserve) # 56. At first I was thinking good grief...we will never get there...it was the last site all the way down to the far right of the beach...192.00 for the site...plus 162.00 for the tickets and checked bags...WOW...354.00 total for a weeks accomodations and plane tickets...cant beat that....We had just gotten back from Niagara Falls with 2 teenagers about 3 weeks prior to this trip...and I was glad to see the savings...and I had always wanted to stay in a baresite, we stayed in a cottage a cpl yrs back and enjoyed that...However...we are campers here at home...and as others have said...if you are NOT a camper...then this is NOT for you...I will tell you though...It was great to be able to walk right out on Cinnamon Bay at night...in the moonlight...no one else around...or go first thing in the morning...when no one else has been on the beach...we could hear the waves from our campsite...We had dinner at the 1 and 2nd night there at Tree Lizard which we enjoyed...maybe it was from a long day of travel afterall it been abt 13 hrs since we left home...but it was good and price wasnt bad either..It was nice to sit up there and listen to the music...get a drink and just hang out...I will tell you though after reading Parafins TR about all the walking he had done and his poor feet...I decided we are getting a jeep...although we had first thought we would skip and just hitch hike...No TY...I opted to spend the extra and get a jeep...:) We also had breakfast at Tree Lizard on friday as well since we had not picked up our jeep yet.

We had decided we would spend Friday snorkeling Cinnamon Cay...Little Cinnamon and even the far right side of Cinnamon...Seems we always miss going there...and the last time we tried to snorkel it the moon jellies were so bad we just swam back to shore... however this time we saw a few large Tarpon at the Cay, a Nurse Shark, Sting Ray and several other fish and of course found the plane . As I said this was my sons first time there and he had said..if I see a fish bigger than me...Im outta here...I was surprised when we saw the Tarpons and Nurse Shark that he didnt swim away...I think he was a bit shocked...but not scared..lol We swam from where to cottages end all the way up Little Cinnamon to find the plane instead of hiking. It looked like someone had tried either to get it out of the water...or maybe just stand it up...and the prop. was on its end...It had net been like that the othe times we had visited it.. I didnt think the snorkeling was all the good around the Cay. It seemed visibilty was not good...the lower end of CB was great...we enjoyed it. We ended up have dinner at the Tree Lizard again...and would pick up the jeep on Sat morning....
To be continued !!!!!!

I had no idea the plane wreckage was in such shallow water! I've only walked out onto Cinnamon - never spent any real "beach" time there. I will definitely add it to my list of beaches to visit this year!

Nice start! The plane really did get moved a lot! I wonder if it was the current or something (someone) else.

I could never baresite myself but I am looking forward to reading about your experience!

Great Prices on your flight. I never even considered flying Spirit out of MB. We are in Eastern NC also!

Me neither. I never bothered to look for it because I thought it was in much deeper water.

Love the trip report!!! :D You stayed at site #56?My site was #54.Here's a pic of site #56 Image I ate dinner there one night with these folks.As for my feet, I should have worn the sandals at home first before the trip.{I wear tenis shoes at home}So bare feet in sandals and lots of walking was a bad combo for me. Once again-love the report,it really made my day! Parafins{Dan}

Love reading trip reports of those who baresite at Cinnamon.

I've stayed in #50, #56, and #58. I definitely agree the far-end of the campground is the best and I have found that those with children tend to like to be closer to the restaurant which works for me. I love hearing the ocean and the tree frogs while laying in the tent. It's such an amazing escape to the reality of the fast-paced life back home.

As you said, I too love the fact that you can be on the beach late at night watching the mooon dance over the water or early in the morning and watch people arrive over the course of late-morning.

Maybe one of these years I'll try a villa but I know there would definitely be things I'd miss about being mere feet away from the beach and out in nature 24/7.
