Iguana Road

Post by GotToGetAway »

We are thinking of renting a villa on Iguana Road for next spring. So, I was checking out Jeep Cam video and I noticed that the road isn't paved, but the video was made in 2009.
Anyone know if the road has since been paved?

Other than the North Shore Road being re-surfaced I don't think any other paving has been or will be done on-island..But I'm sure someone who lives on-island will know for sure.

The lower part of the road is paved. The unpaved upper section is not very rough, but it is narrow and a bit steep at first. Not hard unless you are very nervous.

Hmmm. Well the house is all the way at the end, so that complicates my decision. Although we have dealt with some pretty rough and steep roads, this is the first trip with my inlaws and I'm not sure they can handle it.

Thanks for the info. Back to the drawing board.

I believe there is a guardrail all along that narrow uphill now, and that makes it feel considerably more secure.

Stayed at Andante by the sea last October, the road is not bad at all. I was a bit nervous based on a lot of comments prior to our trip and once we started the trek up the hill I was pleased to find it actually pretty decent based on it was covered with some old cement that actually helped the traction especially if it rained. I would not let it discourage you and Hugo is correct about the guardrail. have a great trip!

Remind me, where is Iguana Road? I think I know but I'm not 100% sure...

Teresa_Rae- Iguana Rd is off of Southside Rd by Bovacap Rd, just past Pond Bay and winds up Hawk's Hill and overlooks Hart Bay.

The Jeep Cam video shows the white guard rail. After discussing with hubby, he thought the ride was easier than our previous two drives considering it isn't full of switchbacks.

So, I showed my mother in law the video of the Jeep Cam, and she said it would be OK. I explained that if it's too rough and it hurts her back, she won't want to leave house until it's time to come home. She gave it the green light, so looks like we have a villa!

Hard to believe that we still have the tan lines from our last trip and we are about to book another one. Granted, we'll have to wait 11 months, but it will be booked!

Ok, that's what I was thinking, is the villa Le Lapin II?

We stayed next door to Le Lapin II at Blue Aweigh so I'm familiar with the road. Blue Aweigh is the second to last house on the road, and Le Lapin II is basically where the road dead-ends.

The drive is one of the least gnarly we've experienced of the 8 villas we've rented on STJ. It really isn't bad at all. The only bad thing about it is that the road is only pseudo-paved so it's really bumpy. It looks like someone walked and dumped a bucket of concrete every few feet. At least it did when we were there 4 years ago.

Here are driving directions, with pictures, to Blue Aweigh:

In the second to last picture you can see two stone posts that mark Le Lapin II's driveway.

Thanks Teresa_Rae for the pictures of the drive. I like how you classify it as the "least gnarly."

I think my mother in law would do better with bumps in the road than tire-screeching switchbacks like our last driveway in Fish Bay. Adding inlaws to a trip adds some new factors, hopefully it will work out.

You guys are awesome!

I think my MIL will be able to handle Iguana Rd better than many other roads.
