Tell me about August on STJ & need a 1 bedroom place...

Wow, more people are going to be down in August than I thought! August 7th at the Beach Bar is a date!

Let me ask you this...this is what we are thinking of packing in 1 cooler...

4 ribeyes, 2 chickens, 2 slabs ribs, 2 lb hamburg, and 2 lbs cheese.

For the 2 weeks, this will get us through many lunches and dinners. The question is...Is it worth our while? We have to buy all of it here (except for the steaks), prepare it, freeze it, then pack it and pay $25 to the airlines.

Just wondering if we should even worry about it. What is everyone's view on this?

Chicken ribs and every variety of cheese you could want are readily available at Starfish and Starfish gourmet. We do freeze and take a few NY strips from Costco and filet mingnon from Omaha steaks, and sometimes a pound of butter, frozen. This year we may take some jumbo shrimp from our fish monger, also frozen. We just put the frozen stuff inside a small softside cooler, like the one you use for lunch, and put it in someone's carry on, or inside the 1 checked bag that we are going to have between the 5 of us traveling. We may take some tuna/salmon packages too.
Just wanted to say that we have had some excellent shell steaks from Starfish on occasion, but they average about $12. each.
I am prepared to be "flamed" for this statement, but I dont find St John to be a gourmet eating island, and have RARELY, in all my travels, had an exceptional meal at any restaurant on St John, and we have been to them all, more than once. Best meal I have ever eaten on St John was our wedding dinner, which was some kind of lobster prepared by Chef Shay
Mulcare. Tied for second to that was some kind of coconut chicken soup at Morgan's Mango years ago vs. the mussels at Zo Zo's. Guess a private chef might be the way to go.

Thnx Knolmom for you input. And we feel the same way with most restaurants that we go to around home, that is why we mostly like to cook our own meals. We'd just as soon hangout and grill, have some drinks and not worry about drinking and driving. Although, we do plan on eating out while there, heck, it is vacation!
