Meat and chicken

Post by M »

We have debated back and forth about freezing meat and chicken to take with us thinking it was the costs that everyone was trying to keep in check. We have decided to just allow for the extra costs and get everything on the island. I'm wondering if anyone can speak to the freshness of the chicken and steak at the grocers. It occurred to me that that could be the reason for all the forum members bringing their own. Thanks everyone for all the great info. My husband and I are leaving one week from today for our first trip there to celebrate our 25th. Simply cannot wait!!! So excited!

I have never bought meat on the island and spend most of my time in Coral Bay so I 'm not sure what is available in Cruz Bay. With that said, I have seen frozen chicken at Love City Market. The price does not stand out in my mind so I'm thinking it wasn't crazy. At Lily's I saw some boneless Rib Eye's (not frozen) that looked amazing but I believe they were 24.99 a lb. I bring some frozen meats from home and buy other items on island, or eat out.
Stjjulie recommended the native sweet potatoes a while back on this forum. We tried them and they were sooo good. We had to go to Starfish market to get them but well worth the trip. They are white and purple. We just put them on the grill until they turned black. They were still white on the inside and great. They smelled real good cooking too.
Have a wonderful anniversary trip, your going to Love it.

Directly across from the Red Hook ferry dock is Marina Market -- excellent butcher counter with high quality meats and chicken - perhaps the best available on either STT and STJ - buy a flat cooler bag and plan your dinners ahead of time - well worth the walk across the street.
If you are renting a car on STT - Costuless has some great meat and chicken at very good prices.

I second Exit Zero's recommendation for buying meat at Marina Market. I was very impressed with the quality of everything I saw, and although I'm sure it was a little more expensive, I don't remember it being way out of line.

I personally will not buy the meat or chicken on St. John. I bring some down and once that's gone we buy fish if I can find it or eat vegetarian. I will freely admit that I am very choosy, and that the meats that are available in the St. John markets would be perfectly acceptable to many people.

I agree with the others though that the meats at Marina Market look excellent. I would absolutely buy from them.

I will put in another vote for Marina Market. Their meat does look great. That being said, we've grilled out just about every trip and purchased our steaks at Starfish. Are they the best steaks we've ever had, probably not, but they made for a good meal.
