Tell me about August
We were there the last full week of August 2010 and it was great. It was hot but not too hot. We stayed in a Villa on Bordeaux Mountain and it was a bit cooler up there. The beaches and restaurant were mostly empty and we were not bothered by any bugs.
Some of the businesses close for a week or two around the end of August for a much needed break so just keep that in mind.
We just beat a hurricane out of there. On the Friday we were leaving we were standing on the dingy dock taking pictures and by Sunday it was a battered mess.
It was a great trip. I would go again in August just to plant myself on those beautiful empty beaches.
Cheers,

The replies are covering the obvious, some also applicable to other times of the year you’ve been there i.e. the wild card of significant rainfall 7-10 days prior resulting in a skeeter-fest.
Sure it can be hot and muggy, but that can happen other times of the year too and I’m sure you know how to deal with that, and for some reason it doesn’t feel as bad as the heat and humidity back home.
As an avid snorkeler, you will really enjoy the extra warm water temps – you will be able to stay in a LONG time without getting chilled – and there are tons of fry in the water that time of year too.
The deeper you get into August the greater potential for tropical waves and storms, building up to greater hurricane potential as you approach Sept.
One pleasant side effect of a more active atmosphere is what we experienced in late August a few years ago – we arrived just as tropical storm Dennis was pulling out, and we had spectacular sunsets every night from the left over clouds.

August is our chosen month to visit St. John because of my job. It is the only month where I can take off two weeks! This August will be our third trip in three years (previous trips were August 2009 and August 2010). We adore visiting in August because the water is fabulously warm, the weather is wonderful, and the island is "deserted," or so it seems! Many days, we'd have a beach all to ourselves! And sure, it's warm and sometimes buggy, but that's why there's water-a-plenty and bug spray. We missed out on Sweet Plantains and Vie's because they were closed last year, but otherwise, we haven't had any issues with visiting during the off-season.
P.S. This is my FIRST post on this forum. I usually post on the Trip Advisor forum, but after discovering (and stalking) this forum for a few months, I have definitely shifted "sides."

Hey, y'all! Thanks for the warm welcome. Obviously I'm a newbie here...I have NO IDEA how I got my email address as my screen name. Grrrrr..... Anyway, I am ColumbiaSCTraveler on TA. I've done a few reviews of restaurants, etc. (WITH PICTURES on some - yay)! And I adore everyone's trip reports, so I'll definitely do one of those this year! We will be there July 29 - August 12 this year! Counting down the days...
We enjoy August. All of the reasons mentioned. It gets hot, so a/c is not an option for us. We stayed off of Frank Bay when we visited with my daughters in 2008. Outside of Cruz Bay the island was pretty quiet. La Tapa closed early that year, so we did not get to visit.

Tell me about August
So who else IS going in August, besides me? First week into the second week, think it's the 2nd till the 11th, with a possible Beach Bar get-together on the first weekend in August.
We will also be attending a wedding on STT during that time.
