walking poles

Post by LauraD »

I have called the airline about this question and have gotton a "questionable yes" from AA. Can I bring in my carry on my Keen walking poles? They retract so they will fit in my bag, normally I do not bring them on vaca with me, but thought they may come in use when hiking some of the hilly hikes. Thanks, Laura

TSA prohibits ski poles in carry on so I personally don't think I would risk it. I do use mine on St.John but pack them in my checked luggage. Some of those hills are Very steep.

Thanks Joppa, I just got off the phone with TSA and they said "no" it is considered a possible weapon that could be used to"bulgden" someone. I may just check a large suitcase, between sending a package to Connections, holding fee(and won't be able to get my package till Monday)the cost difference is minimal and I can bring my favorite pillow! Does it have a sharp end? (I am not a hiker, I don't know these things.) That I can see, I guess... Otherwise, isn't it a lot like a cane? I can just see the TSA officers confiscating grandpa's cane. "Don't want you bludgeoning anyone." Good grief.

Good grief was my first reaction too. They do have a pointed base and I have different tips I can put on for beach versus dirt/gravel hiking. Canes they allow for the medically needy. The more I think about it the more I am leaning to bringing a big checked bag(never done this to the islands as I am a minimal packer). Three more and we will be on the rock, can't wait! :D

We use hiking poles most of the time. It's like 4 wheel driving while hiking.

Just check them in your luggage. It's no hassle.
