Favorite National Park??

Post by Gigi »

We are looking to do something different this fall. Other than the USVI, what is your favorite national park and is September a good time of year to visit? We love the outdoors, moderate hiking, and are not in to camping! Any help would be appreciated!

Ditto. We were in Yosemite last September. A downside is that the waterfalls can be non-existent. But it was our first time there so we didn't know what we were missing and Yosemite is so spectacular that the waterfalls are just icing on an already very rich cake. Still--we would like to get back during a different season so we could see the park with the waterfalls flowing. A huge plus is that the crowds and the traffic are way, way down. That was a wonderful trip--time in Yosemite, time in Carmel/Big Sur, time in San Francisco. We were also fortunate to be there during the best weather that northern CA had in months.

We've also been to Grand Canyon in September which is a good time to be there. We want to take a northern Arizona/southern Utah trip some year soon and will plan it for September. Crowds are way down, weather's great.

We've also been to Kauai in September twice. The first trip just worked out that way. The second we planned to be there in September.

We've found that September is really one of our favorite vacation times.

Yosemite sounds like a great choice. Are there a lot of lodging options inside the park? I need to start the research. Lex, your itinerary sounds pretty good - we have never been to northern CA. so any and all recommendations would be appreciated!

This "flatlander" was awestruck by the Muir Woods National Monument the last time we visited northern California!

Yellowstone, and Glacier. But I believe much of Glacier will be closed in Sept. Smokey mountains would be great in sept too.

Here's a link to a report I put together about out CA trip:

There was another Yosemite thread on this forum:

The TA Yosemite forum is pretty active and people are extremely helpful:

Accomodations aren't plentiful right in Yosemite Valley but it's worth putting some effort into finding a place right in the valley. We stayed in Yosemite Lodge and were totally satisfied. The Ahwahnee is a grand place, certainly worth a visit, but out of our price range. There are a few different types of accomodation in Curry Village ranging from basic unheated tent cabins to heated cabins and a motel. There are other options outside the valley, but it's pretty wonderful to stay right there.

I'd suggest grabbing up some reservations now. The website has a very efficient system to reserve and cancel without penalty. It's possible to hold a few reservations at once. We got what we could, then kept checking back, reserving and canceling our way up to what we wanted. If you can get started now and put some time into monitoring the availability, you should be able to eventually get what you want. Here's the lodging website:

It was really a great trip for us. Everything far exceeded our expectations. I'd be glad to answer any questions but the TA forum is the best source of info and help.
