Which Ferry?
My flight gets in this Thursday at 4:20 p.m. Is it worth trying to get to Red Hook or should I just go to CA and catch the 5:30? I am using Rachel - NO CHECKED LUGGAGE.

You could use the logic that if you catch the 5pm RH ferry you will be on StJ at 5:15 an hour sooner than the 5:30 CA ferry. If miss it, you can catch the 6pm and arrive only a few minutes later than the 5:30 CA.
I personally prefer to set my internal clock to island time as soon as possible.
My personal choice would be to take it easy and catch the CA 5:30 IF it is running. Why start your holiday in a rush with traffic worries? Sit and have a beer while waiting for the CA ferry then enjoy the ride over to StJ.

I'd go with the longer ferry ride from CA also. We were there just about a month ago a couple days before the CA ferry started running again and the traffic in town was horrible at that hour. Rachel had to take us around the island the long way to get to Red Hook.
Give your car rental company a call - they're usually very good about staying open a little late or working with your villa greeter to make sure you get your car when arriving a little late. You may have to go back in the morning to do the paperwork but that's much easier than not having a car when you get there!

I am in the exact same quandry as you are. We arrive a day later on the same flight but we are checking luggage.
1) I think making the 5pm Red Hook ferry is TIGHT consdering the time of day. Even if Rachel shoots the hills that's gonna be tight.
2) I don't have confirmation that the 5:30 pm ferry is actually running, do you? Perhaps Pia or someone on island right now can fill us in. If it's running this is totally doable. Even with checked bags you could probably make it.
3) Check with your car rental co and tell them your situation. You may be able to have the villa greeter pick up the keys for you or if you have rented from them before they MIGHT leave you the keys with the car. OR if they are super nice they might be willing to wait for you. Either way, reach out to them NOW to see what your options are. If they leave keys withthe greeter, you will have to return the next morning to fill out your paperwork.
In our case we have asked for the rental co to leave the keys in the car for us. We've rented from them for 12 years now so they know us and know that we take care of their vehicles. I don't have confirmation yet, but hope to later today. My backup is to go the villa greeter route and maybe give them an extra $20 since they are having to drive out from Coral Bay to do us the favor.
My worst case (even with checked luggage) is we get to RH for the 6pm ferry and arrive on STJ at 6:20- 6:30.
Another option hubby and I considered is splitting up and letting him wait for luggage while I ran out grabbed a taxi and just relied on them to get me to a ferry for STJ by 5pm (their pick). That way I could get over to STJ by 6 and get the car and have that ready by the time hubby caught up with luggage.
We're still considering that....
Good luck. See ya on island!

Hi Gromit! I'm not sure about the 5:30 CA ferry - will separately post that question! Thanks for the tips on the car issue. I have rented from a different company the prior 5 times. I need a "safari truck" this time - so my only option was Paris - hopefully I can work something out. We are literally dropping in for a long weekend for a family wedding at Cinnamon on Saturday and heading home Monday. I HOPE the forecast is very wrong about the next few days . . . . but it looks pretty nasty on the cams right now
