Sweet but Soggy Trip Report

Post by msgcolleen »

A little background info:
This was our 8th trip back to St. John in the last 9 years and the weather has always been perfect each October until now. Our oldest son couldn't miss a whole week of school so it was just me, hubby and our 12 year old son bound for sunny St. John with so many plans to see new beaches, snorkel, hike and explore the island . . . we'll see!

Sat. Oct. 2: Travel Day!
Everything went smoothly except as we were ready to take off from DFW, the pilot makes a u-turn on the runway and informs us there is a problem with baggage placement and we needed to go back to the gate to move a piece of baggage to the front of the plane. (?) Later we find out that an "animal" crate was in the baggage cargo hold when it should have been up front where they keep the pet carriers! Yikes! 45 minutes later we are in the air bound for Miami then on to St. Thomas. We take the 9 p.m. ferry to St. John and met our villa owner and host Paul who took us to Sea Nest, a newly remodeled 1 bedroom studio apartment below his villa right on the Chocolate Hole shore. We would have to wait until morning to check out the view.

Sunday, Oct. 3

And what a view of Chocolate Hole and Paul's 49' sailboat "No Worries Mon". He tells us that great snorkeling is right out front with coral reefs, rocks and lobsters just ready for the picking. He also told us his guests caught a 15 lb lobster right there and I was like "right" and then he showed us the picture!

Image

Wow! I want to catch one!(I took a picture of the picture but don't want to show their faces since I don't have their permission, but I guess the lobster won't mind!)

So, while hubby & son prepare to snorkel Chocolate Hole, Paul took me over to Paris Car Rental to pick up the jeep and then stock up at Starfish Market. I can't tell you what a treat it was to shop all by myself for the first time! We are usually all together and everyone is throwing things into the cart like a hurricane was coming. (If I only knew!) This time I leisurely strolled down the isles pretending I was a local with all the time in the world. I then strolled over to Starfish gourmet to carefully choose the right kind of wine for dinner and rum for everything else! I even made a stop upstairs at the Chelsea Drugstore for better prices on sunscreen and insect repellent. I glanced at the Happy Fish menu making a mental note to come back for dinner later in the week.

Back at Sea Nest and the boys were a little disappointed that they were poked by some baby sea urchins getting into water in front of the villa. Not to worry. Let's just head over to Trunk Bay since there are no cruise ships in today.

We had a great time snorkeling around the cay and didn't think to use the underwater camera since I was saving it for the really great snorkels I had planned later in the week.

Woody's was calling so off we go for mahi sandwiches, calamari, chicken wings and a must have painkiller to christen our first full day!

Back to Sea Nest to freshen up, but hey! It's only 4 p.m.! We head over to Hawksnest for a quickie snorkel and beach sunset then back to the villa to fire up the grill for steaks under a starry sky. What a great day of fun in the sun!

Monday, Oct 4
Wake up guys! It's 8 a.m. and my mission is to create a trail of large rocks in the shallow water out front to cover up the small urchins so we can easily step into Chocolate Hole. It's not the most graceful way to get into the water while holding your fins and mask and scaling the rocks with gloves on. But I make it in and sure enough, it was a nice snorkel. I was thinking that I will need to bring the underwater camera the next time I get in so I can take pics. I did see a huge eel with his mouth open but I was really looking for lobster tentacles sticking out of the rocks! No luck so far but thought I would have plenty of time during the week to hunt for my lobster dinner. . .
I work my way back on my new rock trail, pack our gear and head over to the Beach Bar for lunch for yummy tuna down now, jerk chicken and dark & stormies.

Image

Speaking of stormies, it started to rain. It let up enough to write you all a message in the sand but I think it washed away too soon. Here it is!

Our son was ready to see a turtle so we hit the North Shore to hopefully get lucky at Maho Bay. I have to tell you that this is my favorite road on the planet and it is even better now that they have re-paved the whole road! Such a smooth ride~~~

Love Maho! So calm. Hubby is the first one in to snorkel through a dark cloud of fry fish. The cloud parts quickly as 4 tarpon swim by for a mid afternoon snack. I jump in to check it out and another snorkeler shouts out that he sees a lionfish and wanted to know if we had a lionfish marker. I forgot to pick one up at St. John Spice. (I actually didn't think I needed it!) Anyway the guy said this was the 4th lionfish he has seen this week and I should come over and take a picture. Great! The guy kept poking under a rock to make it come out but all he did was stir up the water and I couldn't see a thing. Oh well, hope someone is able to catch it before it destroys the whole Caribbean marine life!!

Back at Sea Nest for showers and whipped up shrimp and pasta for dinner. We watched the movie Date Night not knowing that watching movies was to be our only form of entertainment over the next 3 days.

Tuesday, Oct. 5
It's raining, it's pouring and it was so nice to lay in bed just looking out the window at the waves crashing on the rocks below us.

The showers would not let up so we ended up watching the movie BIG and Ferris Buller's Day Off. They don't make movies like that anymore! Eventually I saw a break in the clouds and thought a walk around the neighborhood would be a great way to burn off some of the extra calories consumed so far. The walk turned into a hike to Dever's Bay and made it to the top of a ridge to take a picture of the bay below. I nearly flipped out when I saw a lady lounging by a pool wearing her birthday suit! I won't name the villa but it is not very private from the road! Black clouds were approaching so I hoofed it back to Sea Nest to wait for the next set of showers to blow over . . . waiting . . . waiting . . . and finally a hint of blue skies so we take off for lunch at Skinny Legs.

Image

Hello tasty blue cheeseburger and a huge downpour! Might as well order some more dark and stormies and meet some of the locals. Boy did we rub elbows with some crazy but oh so friendly islanders! I wanted to take their picture but they refused saying they wanted no evidence of their whereabouts.

We finally snuck out of there and made our way over to Cinnamon Bay for a soggy swim. Loved the waterfalls along the way.

It was creepy cool to be the only people at the beach, swimming in the pouring rain.

Image

I could only imagine the people in Peter Bay looking down at us saying "Look at those three people in the water down there. They must be hillbillies from Texas. Could you hand me the binoculars and another glass of Dom Perignon? This should be fun to watch!¨

Soaked to the bone, we headed home for hot showers and pizza for dinner. Hoping the sun will come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar, they'll be sun . . .

Wednesday, Oct. 6

What can I say about today except my streak of perfect St. John vacations have come to an end! A big storm blew through last night with heavy downpours but luckily our electricity did not go out. Good thing because we love a/c & fans! We noticed all the boats on Chocolate Hole had washed ashore overnight except for Paul's and one other. We heard that some of the boats that perished were live aboard's and now their home is gone! Paul is taking no chances and motors his boat to Maho for a little more protection from the storm.

The tv cable is out so the information from our I-Phone weather app. is saying tropical storm Otto is moving very slowly over the virgin islands and large outer bands of rain are approaching. Oh goodie! Rain, more rain, wind and more rain and rum!

Lunch time rolls around and we could stay put and eat pb&j or attempt to make it to Starfish for groceries. We should have stayed put but Colleen the Island Wonder Woman can maneuver the roads, no sweat! Uh, wrongo . . . up on a hill towards the South Shore road we see a huge mud slide! I couldn't get around it and couldn't turn around so I slowly backed down the hill making sure I don't fall off the road and what the?? I back into a telephone pole! Where did that come from? The right rear brake light and back quarter panel are a little crunched but we keep inching our way back down the hill to the villa. Do we give up? Heck no! I grab a piece of plywood and a kayak oar and we go back up the hill to scrape away the mud and rock and lay down the plywood to give us traction. This time we did it and head to Starfish for groceries and then over to Woody's for lunch. Funny how the downpours hit hard when we are safely at our lunch destination! We run over to St. John Spice for a new t-shirt for hubby and nice chat with Ruth and the owner of Perelandra. Such nice ladies and they both remembered my Lovango trip report from last year. (ahh, the perfect adventure with not a drop of rain~ what a difference a year makes. I'm not complaining, really!)

I thought it would be a good idea to go to Gibney Beach for a swim but the road in front of Mongoose Junction split in half and as we drove around it we hear a loud pop! What was that? I drive to the top of the hill to the Cruz Bay overlook and sure enough, our tire blew out!

Image

Could this day get any better? We called Paris Car Rental to come and give us a new tire. Ha ha ha! After much debate and a nice tip, they came over and put the spare on and told us to come back tomorrow and they would give us a new tire. (By the way, the tire that blew out was nearly bald so make sure you really look at the tires before you drive away with a rental car on STJ.)

So, no beach day today, we hightail it back to Chocolate Hole but stop at Pond Bay to see all the washed up boats, and thought we were having a bad day? No way! Back at the villa we are hearing this is the most rain that St. John has seen in 27 years! We settle in for a DVD marathon since the cable is still out. Hoping tomorrow that Otto starts to move away so we can enjoy our last few days in peace.

Thursday, Oct. 7
Slept like a baby with constant rain and waves crashing on the rocks below. I could tell it was daylight but not sure of the time. After the coffee kicks in and a check to see if the cable is working, YES! We wait patiently for the rain to die down so we can get a new tire and grab some lunch. The Beach Bar is packed except for 3 barstools just for us! And guess who shows up but the crazy guys we met at Skinny Legs a few days ago and could not believe they remembered us! They were in great "spirits" (literally) since they just won $600 at the Parrot Cay Casino! Free drinks for us!! Boo was busy, busy, busy taking all the orders of drinks and food for the whole place! I don't know how she does it all! Did I say it was pouring down rain the whole time???

View My Video

Finally the rain slows down and we pick up the car with the new tire and God willing, we make it to Gibney! Got the whole place to ourselves and whoosh, RAIN! Luckily I take cover at the Oppenheimer house while the die hard snorkelers gave it a go in the murky water.

Image

Image

Back to Sea Nest for hot showers, spaghetti, more movies and popcorn. Good times! Last full day tomorrow!

Friday, Oct. 8
Am I dreaming? I open my eyes at 7 a.m. and see blue skies! Woo hoo! Grab the gear! North shore here we come! Francis Bay here we come!
Have you ever snorkeled through mulch? It's no fun. We met a really nice couple from Mississippi on their first trip to STJ and they were wondering if it always rains like this. We reassured them that the weather is usually great and they needed to plan another trip soon. The lunch bell was ringing and we threw caution to the wind hoping that the Tourist Trap would be open and we could taste the heavenly lobster rolls and drink right keep left. SCORE!

Image

Traffic along the way!!

Image

Image

Image

Larry was just opening up after being closed for the past week. Loved the Ahi Tuna bites! We met more crazy locals who told us to check out Nanny Point, just up the road where Concordia Eco-Tents are.

Image

Cool~ beautiful vistas of Drunk Bay and down to Nanny Point to check out the surf, cool shells, rock people, dead fan coral, sea sponges and sea glass! (

Image

Image

If you can"t make it to Drunk Bay, I highly recommend the easy drive to Nanny Point! Allllll the way back to Sea Nest for a nice sunset and our last dinner, laundry and packing. BOO!

Image

Saturday, Oct. 9
Of course the sun is shining bright today!! We left the villa at 10 a.m. and drove to Paris Car Rental to fill out the paper work needed for our insurance to cover the fender bender from Wednesday. They said "We need you to go to the police station to fill out a report.¡¨ What? Good thing our flight was at 4 p.m. or we would have been soooo pissed! It took over an hour at the police station and we barely made it to the noon ferry. This was definitely a walk of woe but the first time we ever felt like, let's get the heck out of here and get home so we can get back to normal. 12 hours later we are at home and back to "the big city life"

Final Thoughts:
There was so much we wanted to do but couldn't because of the weather so it's a great excuse to come back! We still had a great time, just different, and we were forced to chill out, hang out and just relax. The week really went by a lot slower instead of the usual go, go, go!
Try to talk and hang out with the locals while you are there! They are such a wealth of information and so fun to hear all their stories of island living! I'm actually glad the tropical storms happened because it made us slow down and just hang out together.
Thank you forum for all your wonderful insight and reporting throughout the year. That is what keeps me patiently excited about our next St. John adventure, maybe not in hurricane season this time!!
Cheers to you and our special island home away from home! Colleen

Thank you for your trip report and photos. I'm so sorry you had such a crappy weather. You guys seem to have a great attitude about it and I really admire that. I would have been totally miserable, travelling so far to the sun and warmth and only getting rain and almost no snorkeling. I hope that your next trip is sunny.

Bummer about the rental car. I thought that was a normal occurance and that's how Island cars become Island cars.....

Sounds like you were able to make the best of the less than perfect circumstances. You have some unique stories to tell about this trip that's for sure. Thankfully you didn't have any mud slides or flooding at the villa where you were staying.

It was a pleasure reading your post because your positive attitude (given poor weather) was so refreshing

Nice trip report. We managed to have a great time that week, thanks to continuous rum punches. I'm already ready to do back. I definitely didn't get my fix.

Thanks, Colleen, for posting such a great trip report! It sounds like your family was able to spend some good quality time together despite the imperfect weather in Paradise. Loved your photos and thanks for sharing them with us.

Is the Dallas Forum gathering still ON for this Friday? If so, which Babe's location? We cancelled our previous commitment and would love to attend if there is still room. :)
