Next question - charter boat trip

Post by Need2GetAway »

Once again, we will be on St. John during Easter week. I'm picturing taking some kind of boat trip (maybe a catamaran?) mainly to sight see, but possibly bird watch (?), or snorkel (we have never snorkeled before). Maybe over to Virgin Gorda?

Anyway, if there's only two of us, do you split the fee with other people on the boat? If so, who arranges that? How much in advance should I make reservations?

How do I do this, I'm clueless??? THANKS!!!

payment

Generally it's just a per person rate, at some point you just pay the captain for the two of you, generally at the end but have see payment needed at start.

Generally have max capacity and try to match people up but depending on the fee i've made trips with just my wife and the crew.

You can get a boat that is shared with lots of other folks, or can get a private charter. One is a set itinerary, the other you can usually choose your trip, but is more expensive (since it's just 2 and you pay for the boat). You can find cats in both categories. Often you can ask on this forum to see if there will be anyone else who may be on island at the same time and may want to share your private charter, or you can ask the captain.

We have sailed on cats with Radio Flyer: http://www.radioflyercatamarancharters.com/

and Fly Girl: http://www.flygirlvi.com/

both fantastic, and both can go to the BVI- although getting to Virgin Gorda is a little tough if you want to sail (slower)- we have been to Jost with both. Fly Girl is smaller but an awesome boat. Loved them both. Both fantastic Captains. Good luck and have a great time!

We've also sailed on Scubadu- but last trip I heard they now only stay in the USVI. Love this boat, too! http://www.sailvi.com/

Also a private charter.

We're booked with Scubadu for Nov 12th....just voted on our menu today. We settled for the the fish tacos -yum! I'll have to do a trip report after we get back.
We're not going to BVI - staying close to STJ to hit some excellent snorkel spots. I'd never really snorkeled seriously until my first trip to STJ in 2007 at age 54. It's now one of my passions - wish I would have tried it much sooner!!!! Make sure you give it a try. My daughter is on Bequia right now, but says that the snorkeling is way better on STJ so it's not to be missed. I find it utterly fascinating and quite soothing to boot.
