La Papaya Aug 28 to Sept 2 part 3

Post by gibber161 »

Well, Monday morning has arrived and when we woke, we didn’t expect to have any power, but much to our surprise, everything was still running. The wind was coming from the north, so it was not bothering us, as the villa is nestled into the hillside on the south side of the island. There was not a lot of rain falling at this time as well.

We made steak omelets from the leftover Filet Mignon and Mimosas for breakfast. We were just hanging around when the villa rep came by and asked how we were doing and advised us to stay inside and to close the shutters if the wind got to bad. He brought us some flashlights and he told us to use the pool water to flush the toilets if the power went out, as the villa uses electric pumps for the water.

The power went out once and came right back on around 10:00am, then the power went out a second time, but again, came right back on. The third time the power went out, it never came back on. Now with no power, we sat by the large sliding glass windows and watched the storm as it passed over our heads, as the wind was still coming from the north. The boats in Chocolate Hole were doing fine at this point in time as they were also protected from the wind.

Around noon there seemed to be a lull in the storm, so we went out and shot a short video from the deck. You can hear the strength of the wind whistling through the trees. You can see that I also had to board up the shutters to protect the sliders from the storm.

We went back inside and made sure we had all the flashlights close at hand as it was getting dark outside. We settled in around the one door that I didn’t shutter and read our books that we’d brought down with us.

The one thing about a hurricane is that if the wind starts out coming from the north, it will eventually come back at you from the south. We noticed the wind change direction when all the trees and bushes started blowing at us instead of away from us. The waves down at Chocolate Hole were picking up white caps and appearing larger as they got to shore. The rain was really coming down and it was hard to see the water anymore. We never saw the boats when they pulled away from their moorings, because of the extremely poor visibility. When the winds died down a bit, we only saw the sailboat that sank, every other boat was on the rocks.

It was now about 5:00pm and we were getting hungry. We had marinated boneless chicken breast in the refrigerator, so I figured I could cook them on the gas grill outside. I got the grill and pulled it into the well-protected alcove in front of the villa and we had a great hurricane dinner of grilled chicken with baby greens and Red Stripe and Presidentes.

For the rest of the night we had drinks and enjoyed each others’ company and went to sleep hoping that the power would be back on in the morning.

Note: The interior pictures are from our previous trip last year and put in to show you where we spent our hurricane day.
