What to serve post breakfast pre lunch?

Post by AH »

We are having company stopping by this Sunday to visit between 10-11am. We are staying in a fifth wheel on the beach so my kitchen is small. Any ideas what to serve considering they have had breakfast and it is too early for lunch?
Appreciate any and all ideas.

Are you sure they'll have eaten by 10 AM on a Sunday? If yes, then I would put out a fruit platter canteloupe, grapes, berries etc., and maybe a piece of blue cheese and a wedge of brie, with sliced toasted baguette to spread it on.

If you want to get a little fancier with the fruit, I made a delicious fruit salad earlier this week from nectarines, peaches, and raspberries, all tossed in a ginger-basil syrup. Here's the syrup recipe: put two parts sugar to one part water in a saucepan and dissolve sugar. Toss in a handful of rough chopped basil and a 1 inch pice of ginger sliced into coins. Set aside and let steep one hour. Strain and discard solids. Gently toss fruit with syrup to taste. Start with a couple of tbsp. and keep adding until it tastes right.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

While liamsaunt's suggestion is infinitely more refined, I co-sign Pia's suggestion. Nothing says "welcome" quite like a tray of mimosas and bloody mary's. Or painkillers, which are a legitimate breakfast item since they contain OJ.

I second that - bloody marys, mimosas, and fresh fruit (peaches!). Have a fresh pot of coffee, cream, and sugar served in demitasse cups with Tia Maria or some corrective concoction.

Bloody Mary's served with pickled veggies like okra, green beans, and asparagus. And olives of course. Plus a nice piece of celery.

Maybe a nice warmed brie, with a chutney on top, and served with water cracker. And grapes on the side. :)

Buy some scones or mini croissants and put a a plate of assorted berries with a bowl of sour cream dip. I just mix sour cream with a little bit of sugar or honey, a teaspoon or so of vanilla and/or almond extract and a few tablespoons of heavy cream to thin it out to a dippable consistency. Have some good coffee with a shot of Bailey's in it! Whether they've had breakfast or not, they won't be able to turn this down!

Personally, I would tell them that you hope they come for breakfast and to not eat much before they come. That way, they won't feel bad or uncomfortable if they arrive full and you have made a visible effort for them.

If they say "no, we will eat first"...then you go the drink route-mimosas or something with some banana bread/cream cheese or something really simple on the side, and good coffee.

I think I can honestly say I've never had a mid morning guest who wasn't here the night before! Never knew this was such a popular visiting hour :)

Mary Beth, we might get more than usual because we're halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego, so when people stop by, it's usually on the way from one city to the other. That usually means mid-morning or happy hour! :D

My only mid morning guest is the trash or recycle people and because I'm at work, I feel bad that I'm not here to greet them with a coffee drink or something.

At work, my midmorning guest is my boss and well, I won't go there.

Am I missing something here? Maybe that we're not retired yet?

I look forward to having mid morning guests someday and will use all of your suggestions for that occassion.

I especially like the bloody marys or bailys coffees!

Terry, it's only on weekends that we get visitors, and not always that often. But I'm lovin' these ideas! :D

Hahaha me too MB! That's why I guess mimosas, etc. did not occur to me. Most people are already here and have had their share of alcohol the night before.

Well, then you all need to stop by mid morning and get me prepared for that sort of guest. I'll stock the liquor cabinet and get prepared. I can hardly wait. Maybe it's preparing me for the "pay it forward" lifestyle. 8)
