We are SOonthebeach 2010 Part 4- the end

Part 4: the end ☹
Days 9, 10, 11, and the walk of woe….

Part 1 here: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/f ... highlight=

Part 2 here: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/f ... highlight=

Part 3 here: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/f ... onthebeach

Day 9: Beach hopping! There were a few more beaches we wanted to make sure to sink our feet in, on the last full day we had the Jeep. After sleeping in too late (as usual), we headed out to the furthest one on the list- Francis. Another first! Can’t believe we haven’t been here before- we’re lame. Pretty beach:
Image

Image

I changed the color on this one on purpose- just like the way it looks:
Image

The Francis Bay trail looked interesting- had an elevated walkway near the beach. Put that on the list for next time for sure!

We hung out there for a little while. Girls were in their natural state, fighting:
Image

Girls! Pretend you like each other for a SECOND. Puhleeeaseeeee……
Image

On to beach #2 of our four beach tour: Maho! Definitely NOT a first. We love Maho.
Image

Did not snorkel it today, but will definitely do that on a future trip. We keep talking about bringing lunch and just hanging out here for the day. But hubby gets a little restless so we usually do not stay at one beach for more than a few hours. Good thing there are plenty more of them to move on to!
Image

Beach # 3 was Cinnamon- my favorite.

The girls loved looking at all the cool stuff hanging off the trees on the walk to the beach:
Image

Image

We have always gone to the left when we get to the beach- no idea why. So this time we headed right. Was pretty crowded today so we walked almost all the way to the end. Tucked ourselves in past the gut, by a trailhead to the campground. The kids built sandcastles with Dad while I floated, and floated, and floated…….
Image

Image

Hours went by. We forgot to eat lunch! Oops. Was a perfect Beach Bar kind of day, but alas, BB was still not re-opened. As we drove by BB we decided to make one more quick beach stop at Frank Bay- mostly so I could take some pictures. Yea- they like each other right now!
Image

Quick stop for a late lunch at Woody’s for fried everything. Good! Sorry- forgot the pics. Happy hour was descending as we finished so we left quickly in order to give some thirsty folks our table, then sprawled out at the pool for a little while.
Image

This was our daily exercise- walking to the villa:
Image

Man, I am loving the kitchen (we’re usually stuck in a hotel room). Dinner was a mixture of leftovers, pizza and hot dogs. We are eating like royalty! I just feel lucky they have buns this week ;-)

Day 10: puppies, pets, pouts and pool. We started the day late again. I have figured out that, unless we are meeting a boat or a ferry, we just CANNOT get out of the house before 10 am. And it’s not like we are the big partiers- our latest night here was waiting for Café Roma take out and getting back at 9 pm!! School starting in a little over a week is going to be a serious shock to our systems.

We headed into town, and hubby dropped the girls and me off at the ACC while he went to turn the car in.
Image

Another first! We have donated to the ACC but have never visited. What a great place. You can tell they love the animals there.
Image

Connie and Jen were so sweet. We gave them the goodies we brought, pet a bunch of really sweet cats and kittens in the office, then Jen took us downstairs to find a few dogs that needed a walk. Out came Winnie and Foxy! We neglected to shut the gate behind us, so there was a little bit of a game of cat and mouse- that Winnie is FAST! But Jen finally caught her. Leashes on, and off we walked. Not quite sure who was walking who.
Image

Or who had a better time.
Image

They were really sweet little dogs, and there were several more sweet ones at the shelter. If you are looking to adopt, I highly recommend one of these cuties!
Image

After saying goodbye, we headed down the hill to meet Jim. That’s when the waterworks started. Little SO Jr had fallen in love with Foxy the dog and just did not want to leave her. Cried all the way through town, and into SJ Kids. The only thing that finally made her feel better was a painted wooden dolphin at SJ Spice that she had been eyeing all week. Whew. Ruth to the rescue and she didn’t even know it!

Got to chat with Ruth a little (Ruth- apologies for the weird burst of craziness that hit my kids in the middle of the store- apparent sugar high from an overload of Sprite and Root Beer all week- they are now on a detox program). Ruth joined us as we ventured down to BB to check out the progress. Looked like they were stocking it so my hopes were high for a final dinner there our last day- tomorrow.
Image

Also had to stop in to Freebird for a little more torture/love for Rafaela the pug. The girls just ADORE her. OK, we’re pretty partial, too. We’re pug people. She’s a great dog. I love her little perch there under the window.
Image

Lunch was another first- Spyglass. We had been to the Balcony once, but have not been since it changed. Can’t beat this view!!
Image

Lunch was excellent- Kids had pasta with shrimp, hubby had fish tacos, and I had a Jerk chicken wrap. Was full of peppers, cheese, and sauce wrapped in an herb wrap. Yummmm! No leftovers today.
Image

Image

Image

After lunch, a little shopping. Went into ViBE just below Spyglass. Great stuff in there. Bought a few ornaments. While there, I couldn’t resist some of the jewelry. Luckily hubby had stepped out to take a business call. Just a few little pieces, nothing much, really! Shhhhhhhh….!

Saw Pia in the info hut on our way to grab a cab. So great to see her again. Chatted for a minute until a customer walked up. While I was chatting with her, the kids snuck off again to pet Rafaela the pug, so I had to pry them off the poor dog yet again. What a great day getting to see Ruth and Pia! Good to chat with you guys.

The kids had been begging since we got here to go to the Kids Club at the Westin. They LOVE that place. So we cabbed it back to the hotel, dropped them at the Kids Club for a few hours while hubby and I had some peaceful, quiet time by the pool reading. I actually got a little of my book read! Another first ;-) Of course, as soon as they came back, the bickering ensued and I put the book down and was back to referee mode. I don’t know about other parents’ experiences, but my kids do MUCH better when we travel with friends with kids. They each need playmates to keep from torturing each other on a regular basis. Gotta get some friends down here with us next time!

Hit the Mango Deli for a few supplies to add to the sandwich, hot dog and leftover feast we were planning for dinner. Are you sensing a pattern? We are decidedly NOT fancy eaters. A pop up rainstorm started just as we got back and lasted about 30-40 minutes. Perfect timing again! We settled in for the night. Went to bed early in the HOPES that we would wake up just a little earlier on our last full day on the island. Sigh.

Oh- almost forgot the highlight of the day! Hubby was filled with dread as he went to turn in the jeep to Conrad Sutton. He had been yelled at a few times when he picked it up, and again when we parked there a few days later. In fact, we spent the rest of the week parking at Slim Man’s….. I think Conrad really scared him! Funny, as usually hubby is not the type to get intimidated. I think he thought he must have done something wrong, and he just knew something was going to be wrong when he dropped it off. Had to pay 3 times at the pump to make sure it was COMPLETELY filled up, and he pulled out the floor mats at least twice to knock the sand out. Even checked under the seats for any remaining trash. And this is a man that rents cars weekly and is not very tidy.
Anyway, when we met up, hubby was beaming. Said he and Mr. Sutton had a very nice chat. Hubby told him that the alarm went off every time we opened the locked door (thanks to the lack of the alarm button on the key ring). Mr. Sutton told him it was just too expensive to replace the alarm button, and hubby said that was fine with him since we had made a game out of it all week. “how fast can Mommy get the key in the ignition? 2 honks? 3 honks? 4 honks?” He said Mr. Sutton smiled at him and said “I like you”. Well that just made hubby’s week.

Oh, by the way- here is a shot of my little perch where I sat each night uploading pictures to photobucket, posting, emailing, and cruising FB. I chose to go ahead and keep the foggy picture, as this was the state of my camera for the first 10 minutes every time we left the room. I LOVE having the AC, and I just have to giggle at the fogginess of everything when we step outside- glasses, sunglasses, computer monitors, camera lenses. Only downer to this villa was no water view. I am usually kind of a freak about the view, but I think we have gotten so comfortable here that this time it just didn’t matter as much. Although, when we rent a house again it will HAVE to have a view!
Image

Day 11- last day. We always tend to have our busy adventures at the beginning of the trip, and wind down the last day or two of the trip. We like it that way. Gives me time to get organized, do laundry (yes, I’m that person), pack, etc. Plus we like to just zone out on the last day that we can- before the crazy travel day. Jeep has been turned in, fins have been turned in. Nothing to do but lay by the pool! So that’s what we did. Spent a little time on the beach conquering the inflatable ice burg and trampoline that are in the bay at Great Cruz.
Image

Floated in the pool, stared up at palm trees, had some cocktails, ate lunch by the pool, took a nap, stared at more palm trees, watched iguanas climb said palm trees…. Just did a whole lot of NOTHING. And. It. Was. Awesome.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I was nervous all day- hoping, hoping, hoping that BB would be open by the time we got in to town for sundowners and dinner…. Would be a perfect ending to a great trip. Dum Dum Dum….
Image

Yea!! BB was open! After dropping off our book donation for the school at the info kiosk (thanks Pia and Dayanna!!) we headed right over and planted ourselves for the evening. Ahhhhhhhh.
Image

Even the sunset was the prettiest of the whole trip. BB is open. We got to go once before we left. All is right with the world. Turns out lluvstjohn and family were right next to us, but we didn’t know it- darn! I know they had just as much fun as we did.
Image

Yes- that's hubby on a WORK CALL! Poor hubby. I know you feel sorry for him doncha.
Image

Image

We watched the sun set until the last ray disappeared, then sadly headed back to the villa for final packing. Travel Day starts early…..

Day 12: the walk of woe ☹

Why is it that we can fall asleep early all week, and wake up late, but the night before leaving (with a 5 am wake up call), no one can get to sleep? Arrrggghhh.
Up early, final packing, searching for missing toys (oh the panic!), and headed down to the dock. Have to say we’re a little spoiled by the cabs at the Westin. Very nice to just wander to the lobby and there is always a line of them, even at 7 am. Completely uneventful travel day, which is nice.

Last night:

Walk of Woe:

Thanks Ruth!

Kids hid during the WOW pictures- here are the sad faces:
Image

Image

To steal shamelessly from another poster that did this- I like this self portrait- especially the way the sun acts as a fun house mirror and makes me really tall and skinny!
Image

Bye for now, Love City:
Image

Still woeful on the ferry:
Image

There’s that disappearing in the rear view mirror thing I hate:
Image

Image

A few plane pictures. 5 minutes after I shot this they were SOUND asleep. Wish there was a non-stop to DFW!! This was the puddle jumper to San Juan:
Image

Image

Image

And so we arrived in hotternhell Dallas. Exhausted, but so happy after an AWESOME trip. Thanks for riding along with us!

Observations from this trip:

I overpacked- AGAIN! I am truly embarrassed to even show this picture.
Image

You would think after 5 years and 11 (I think) trips I would figure out that ½ the stuff I bring, I don’t wear. I really only need swimsuits, coverups, a few t-shirts and shorts, and a ball cap. Two pair of flip flops (I usually just wear one pair the whole time, but need the “blow out” back ups). Hubby is the only one that packs well. I think I have some sort of “oh, no look what I forgot” phobia. Plus I brought all my running clothes this time, just knowing I was going to work out. A lot. Ha. Never saw the light of day. Sheesh.

Kind of hot this trip. Now, coming from Dallas I should be slapped for saying that (Colleen- it IS Africa hot here in Dallas!!). But the sun did feel just a little hotter this trip. Not complaining though!! I’ll take sun over rain any day!

Crazy amount of iguanas. The Westin has a horde of them, but we had noticed on the past few trips that there seemed to be a lot fewer. Well, the population has exploded again. One morning I saw 13 of them- just laying around- all in the same area! Fun for the kids, and they mind their own business. Sometimes they pose for me, which I like ;-)

10 days and we still ran out of time to do everything. Wow. It goes so fast. Next trip with kids may have to be 2 weeks. Ran out of time for some adventures and some restaurants. Of course, we always need a running list of “firsts” for the next trip!

Lots of firsts checked off this trip! Tourist Trap, Waterlemon, snorkeling all over (we had only done Trunk once a few years back!, Spyglass, Francis, visiting the ACC, Banana Deck, ferry to Jost, Indians. Really embarrassed that some of these were still firsts!

Still some to do’s: Drunk Bay trail, Ram Head Trail, Candi’s BBQ, Jakes for breakfast, Jumbie Bay, Denis Bay… plus so many more I can’t think of now.

Repeats that will always be a repeat: Skinny Legs, Beach Bar (do I really have to even mention that?), Cinnamon, Sloop Jones, Shipwreck, Jost, Maho, Woody’s take out window, Salt Pond, Lime Inn… and again, many more I can’t think of now. Plus we have new repeats from our firsts!

Most of all, the biggest change on this trip was the influence of this forum. Thanks to all of you for your recommendations and advice! We discovered so many new things thanks to you guys. And it was SO great to get to meet some of the forum folks that live there and are SO amazingly helpful to all of us that come and visit (Ruth, Pia, John and others…). I am sad to have missed TouristTrapCheryl- is on the list for next time!

Thanks for listening to me drone on and share some of my pics. This was really fun to do, and I love that I have a day-by-day account of our trip, since I’m sure I will forget the details by Friday. Now I will sit back and enjoy living vicariously through the rest of ya’ll that are visiting this fall.

I really enjoyed your trip reports. The Westin beach looks like a lot of fun! Can we go there if we are staying somewhere else?

You have a beautiful family. I SO understand the picture "try to look like you like each other". I say that to my boys often.

Also, I am a lot like you daughter. I leave pet shelters with tears in my eyes.
