Canon Powershot G11

Post by Maggy »

I'm thinking of buying a Canon Powershot G11 with uw housing. Does anyone have experiences with this camera, good or bad, above or under water. It will be used both for scuba diving and snorkeling and of course on land.

Since I live in Sweden, cameras are more expensive here. Do you have any idea how much it would cost in the US? I'm passing Washington on my way to paradise in November, so there's always a possibility to buy it there.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Maggy,
I have the canon G10 with underwater housing and it takes great pictures. Here is the link to them

Sawed that board three times and it is still too short...

We purchased our Canon D10 at Boolchands in Charlotte Amalie last March. We were staying one evening on St Thomas before going on to St John the next day. Strolling around downtown before dinner we wandered into Boolchands and found the camera at a price that was under the online retailer's prices so we purchased it. It might be something you'd want to consider. Here is a link for their website which doesn't tell you much. Perhaps you can call them about price and availability of your G10. http://www.boolchand.com/

Hi Maggy , I have the g11 which I purchased last fall prior to our St John trip. I do not have the underwater housing for that camera but an older smaller Canon SD600. It seemed silly at the time to purchase a second UW housing when I have a perfectly good one for a smaller camera, but I may do so in the future.

As far as the camera itself goes I am very happy with it. I had considered a DSLR but I didn't want the bulk of that camera and the g11 is a nice size for me. It has good manual capabilities as well as fully automatic if desired.

I paid around $500 for mine last Sept/Oct? My sister recently decided to but a smaller camera from her DSLR and looked at the g11 which she said was $500 where she lives.

Hope this helps.

edited to add link to online pics:

Nearly all pics were taken w/ the g11. Underwater are in a different set and taken w/ the Canon SD600.

And you can find this camera on Amazon:

Thank you everyone for your help. I don't know how much the G11 differs from the earlier model G10, but I guess not too much.

The camera costs about $700 in Sweden. And the housing at least $300. Unfortunately I can't order it from Amazon, as there are heavy customs fees and taxes that needs to be paid when you get the package. If you buy it in the US, it's kind of hard to prove I didn't have it when I left. Some sellers says that you should post your receipts to yourself, so the customs can't prove you bought it abroad. I remember us doing that with golf clubs back in the nineties (sp?).

Well, it seems like it's a good camera, so maybe I'll go for it.

I have it and love it! I shoot with a DSLR often but I love this camera for ease of use and carrying around. I think it takes terrific pictures- does colors really well. I do not have the housing for it, but thinking about it. We bought mine right here on STJ in February for about $480 I think.

Hi Maggy,
I have the G10 with housing, love this little camera, I know a lot of pros here in DC that carry this with them at all times. I have played with the G11 and you will be happy with it. The controls are great and the color balance.
Here are a few shots I did with my G10 last year.

You can buy this at Penn Camera here in DC or Ace photo in Ashburn, VA, near Dulles Airport.

Good luck!

One more thing, Ace photo usually stocks the underwater housings, call him ahead of time to make sure he has it when you get there. If you need more info let me know.

Hi Maggy,
My husband bought a Canon S-90 ($400) and UW housing ($170) this year and used it on our trip to the BVIs in June. Took excellent pics, both underwater and above water and he was very happy with it. Its smaller than the G11, but largely the same for sensor and lens. It has full manual control which he likes (previous UW camera was Canon SD-700, which also took excellent pics).
Someday we will post pics on a website so we can show all these nice ones!

The S90 would be a good alternative. It gets good reviews also. Personally I don't mind a little bigger camera, but not too big of course. I got some money on my recent birthday and you don't buy cameras that often, so I figured I really should buy what I want and don't be cheap.

Regarding buying it in the US or in STT, I have been rethinking. I think I would like to buy it at home and get to know the camera before my trip. So much more fun to do in STJ than reading manuals.

Thanks again for all help.

I'm also getting a new camera (I STUPIDLY left mine in a taxi). I've also narrowed it down to the G11 and S90 but I can't decide if the few extra features the G11 has is worth the extra money. What do you think?
Sadly, I am tickerless :(

Well, I think I'll go for the G11, but I will visit a camerastore tomorrow to see them both and compare. I think the price differs with $150 here.

Thanks Maggy! I thought of doing that too, but I live in the middle of nowhere and can't find anything close that has them!
