John is also a good snorkeler and underwater picture taker. Around half of the underwater photos posted in my report were taken by him.
We actually had a snorkeling competition going this time--before the trip we made a list of the rarest things we thought we might find underwater, and the first person to get a photo of it got to check it off in our journal. The person with the least check marks had to pay for dinner at Asolare our final night. I won, but barely.

I just love examining all the flowers at Caneel. Everything was so green and lush during our visit.
We were there during the last week in June and the Hawksnest area looked at least 75% occupied. We spoke to a female employee and she said the block of rooms where we were staying was due to get a new roof this summer. We could see that some of the unoccupied rooms were empty, no furniture. The resort must have shut down that entire section.

gibber161, I am fairly certain that Caneel no longer offers the Grand Buffet. However, there is a seafood buffet with steel pan music on Monday nights. I am pretty sure, but not 100% certain, that you can get grilled lobster at that buffet. We were not at Caneel on a Monday night so didn't try it.

Thank you Becky for taking the time and effort to write the reports and to post all the pictures (I love TR's with lots of pics). They have been wonderful read and your pictures are great as always. Are all the uw pictures taken with the D10 or did you bring your older camera with housing as well?
I would love staying a few days at Caneel sometimes, but is it possible to find a night there under $500?
I'm also sorry about the rainy weather. When you get over half of the stay with rain, it's hard not to get disappointed. When people say it's better to be in STJ on a rainy day than at the office, I think that's true if you get one day of rain. But not after several days. We had lots of rain the last week in May and it made the water murky, so snorkeling was not good. I don't think I will ever get my husband with me to STJ after two visits and they both were very rainy. But he will go to Virgin Gorda, so I can live with that

I would really love to stay at Caneel one of these days. We have 4 days at the end of our April stay that we have not yet booked accommodations. We never have stayed there in the past because with 2 kids they require you to rent 2 rooms. #1 will be joining us for a few days from college but won't be with us the whole time. Maybe 2011 will be our year!

Maggy we used both cameras. I thought they were fairly equal in picture quality. For example, of the two triggerfish photos I posted, the first was taken with my older Canon, and the second with the D10. I think the biggest advantage to the D10 is that you can actually see the viewfinder underwater!
As far as Caneel rates, it varies depending on the time of year. The courtside and garden rooms are sometimes available for around $325. They are not on the water, but they are large and have lots of nice details. I'd guesstimate it's a 5-minute walk to the beach from those rooms.

...) and I do think that your first picture of the trigger is much better. We are trying to like our (my husbands) D10, but we are not sure yet. Well, I wouldn't mind staying in one of the garden rooms, so maybe in the future I will have a look at it. I tried the idea on my husband, that end a Virgin Gorda trip with 3 nights at Caneel (I said it was superb snorkeling there) and he was interested. Well, it has to be another time, next April is already booked.
