Day nine

Overcast…again. I made a big breakfast of broccoli omelets, which we ate while watching the rain pour down. Another washout day. Read books and napped. We did have a visitor during one (very brief!) semi-sunny moment:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4856217057/" title="colibri laughing gull by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4098/485 ... 89666d.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="colibri laughing gull"></a>

I made coconut curry chicken with Jospehine's yard long beans and brown rice for dinner.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4856834330/" title="colibri coconut chicken by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4098/485 ... 165936.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="colibri coconut chicken"></a>

More rain. Sleep.

Day 10

Sunshine, yay! Back to Francis Bay, where we snorkeled the right side all the way out to Mary Point.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4850898802/" title="Francis by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/485 ... 187045.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Francis"></a>

It was awesome. We found two octopi:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4850620299/" title="Francis octopus 4 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4115/485 ... c6d0ae.jpg" width="281" height="500" alt="Francis octopus 4"></a>

a lobster:

tons of groupers, a gryasby:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4851220878/" title="Francis grasby 3 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4096/485 ... ffa59c.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Francis grasby 3"></a>

Feather duster worms:

loads of fish:

Creole wrasse:

four turtles--this was the biggest one. We dubbed her "Myrtle.":

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4851256022/" title="Francis turtle myrtle by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/485 ... 0a5179.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="Francis turtle myrtle"></a>

Angelfish:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4851242788/" title="Francis queen angelfish and grubt by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4094/485 ... 17f78e.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="Francis queen angelfish and grubt"></a>

a remora—this is not the greatest picture because it was far away and in deep water, but I wanted to post it because a while back we were talking about a supposed shark sighting at Waterlemon that I suggested might have been a remora. You can see how shark-like it appears. This one was about four feet long:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4856200259/" title="Francis remora 2 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/485 ... 18a5f7.jpg" width="500" height="281" alt="Francis remora 2"></a>

anenome, and loads of gorgeous coral. Here are some Christmas tree worms:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4855160193/" title="Francis christmas tree worms by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4081/485 ... 220c8d.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Francis christmas tree worms"></a>

By the time we came out it was time for a late lunch, so we headed over to Cinnamon Bay to eat on the beach. It was so windy! The surf was really choppy and we could not snorkel the cay.

Back to the house to get ready for the Beach Bar gathering. It was a small gathering but fun. I enjoyed meeting Augie and his family, and seeing some other folks again like Mr. and Mrs. Captain Jay and Sea-nile, and meeting some other new people too. And of course it is always great to talk with Ruth!

After the Beach Bar, we went to dinner at La Tapa. This is always one of my favorite meals. It was too dark to take pictures, but we had lots of our favorites, like the sauces con pan (I STILL wish they had better bread!), and the grilled langoustines.

We came home from dinner to find that a large party group had moved in a couple of houses down. They were BLASTING Kenny Chesney and screaming and whooping it up like crazy people! We actually thought it was kind of funny, and of course when we got sick of it, we had our wonderful soundproof sliders.

Day 11

Woke up to another stormy day. Sheesh. We went back to bed hoping the weather would blow over. We ended up sleeping until around 10, and then woke up to find that the power had gone out and we had no running water. I called Catered To, and once again, someone was at the house in less than 10 minutes to prime the water pump. This company gives such great service!

It cleared in the afternoon, so we headed out to snorkel. Given the poor weather and the fact that the ocean was so choppy, we decided to skip Blue Cobblestone. We tried for the Leinster shore snorkel but again it was too choppy.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4856841676/" title="leinster waves by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/485 ... 099ae3.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="leinster waves"></a>

We ended up heading back to Maho. No snorkeling though, as the skies opened up and it started pouring rain (again). We attempted to swim anyway:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4856842304/" title="maho john (2) by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4081/485 ... 672b76.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="maho john (2)"></a>

We eventually conceded to the weather and headed into town for a late lunch at the Lime Inn. We each had grilled mahi—mine with mango glaze and John’s with wasabi mayo.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4856839892/" title="lime inn mango mahi by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4138/485 ... 0908ab.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="lime inn mango mahi"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4856219575/" title="lime inn wasabi mahi by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4081/485 ... ca14c5.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="lime inn wasabi mahi"></a>

We stopped for Candies BBQ for dinner, and headed back to the villa for our last night. Candies was really nice—I was getting sick of cooking by that point. We ordered a chicken plate and a ribs plate with sides of rice and beans, pasta salad, sweet corn and cole slaw. All that food was only $21. And Candie was really nice too. Recommend for a cheap eats. Here is only a small fraction of it—there was enough to feed at least four adults!

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4863746419/" title="candies by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4099/486 ... c67fa2.jpg" width="500" height="333" alt="candies"></a>

Storms continued through the evening so we just villaxed. We did get one last dip in the pool in between storms which was nice.

Day 12

Rain continued in incredible downpours—you could not even see beyond the deck of the house! We waited for a lull in the rain to quickly load the jeep with our luggage and said a hasty goodbye to Colibri.

We drove over to Caneel in the deluge—they were kind enough to send someone to the parking lot with umbrellas for us. We got the room we requested, yay!

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/181884551/" title="cottage seven interior by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/66/18188 ... a622a9.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="cottage seven interior"></a>

Then we headed back into town for lunch, stopping to take some photos of the flooding at the resort.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4850892614/" title="Caneel underwater by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4078/485 ... a8bd4f.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Caneel underwater"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4850270227/" title="Caneel flooded 2 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/485 ... a406de.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Caneel flooded 2"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4857956471/" title="Caneel underwater 2 by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4122/485 ... c9fa39.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Caneel underwater 2"></a>

We picked Ocean Grill so we could park at Mongoose (Slimmans had been closed for the past few days). It was crowded and slow, but the food, when it came, was quite good. I had a mahi sandwich and John had mahi tacos. The rain was completely out of control. I have never seen anything like this before! The gut that runs under Mongoose Junction was completely flooded.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/4856232639/" title="mongoose ghut by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4120/485 ... 332045.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="mongoose ghut"></a>

The parking lot was completely flooded too! People who parked in the back of the lot were cut off from the road by the rushing water.

Back to Caneel, where we just hung out in the room and watched the rain, read books and surfed the net (Caneel has wifi in the rooms now). We ended up eating at the Equator because of the weather.

Caneel had staff tooling around the grounds in golf carts, looking for any guests that might have ventured out to give them rides. The man who picked us up told us that the flooding had not been as bad as this at Caneel for about 15-20 years, when a hurricane came through and closed the resort completely for two years.

At the Equator, about half of the restaurant was closed off because the rain was coming in and soaking the furniture. Despite all the wetness, the food was really good! Much better than prior meals I have had here. We started with conch spring rolls and chicken roti, and then had grouper and mahi.

After dinner we went back to the room in the pouring rain. Thankfully someone was there to give us a ride--the pathways were completely underwater by the time we finished eating. Nothing to do but go to bed, so we did, with fingers crossed for some sunshine the next day.

Just read 1, 2, & 3! What a nice day to decide to catch up on the forum. :) Great pictures and reporting-- no one's food ever looks as good as yours around here, even just barbecue.

Thanks, Becky!

Oh my that's a lot of rain! I have never seen Caneel so green tho. We've only been there in Feb/March or April but never stayed as guests. It really is so beautiful.

liamsaunt these are great! Love your reports and pictures. A few questions for you. Is flickr easy to use to upload to here? It is an easy upload option in iPhoto on my Mac, but was not sure how easy it is to use for copying and pasting to the forum. Currently I am using photobucket.

Also- how do you attach links for your prior posts at the beginning of your new post? I am a TR newbie and trying to learn from the experienced masters... thanks!

Still hope to meet you two some day...

WOW all that rain! That reminds me when we were in St. John two years ago and days of endless rain and then Omar. At least you got your room at Caneel!

mahojim, that pasta recipe was so simple. All I did was grill up some chicken breast and slice it, then tossed it with bowtie pasta, some pesto sauce, halved grape tomatoes, a handful of torn basil, a handful of arugula (you don't need to add this I was just trying to clean out the fridge), some coarsely cracked peppercorns, and some shaved parmesean cheese. That's it!

Agent99, yes, the island was very green, the greenest I think I have ever seen it. But the rain was nutso. Did I mention that we had an earthquake too?!

SOonthebeach, I've only ever used flickr, so I don't know if it is easier than photobucket. To add previous installments to your future trip reports, just open your original thread and copy and paste the code from the address line. I hope you are having a great day on the beach!
