Anyone have any thoughts on iPhone 4?

Post by Gromit »

I'm itching to get one. But keep hearing bad reviews.

I'm pretty low maintenance in the tech department: I just want it to work and does what it says it will do (or is that high maintenance?).

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts before I drop a couple of benjamins I would welcome them....

24 hours into it...

I love the fact that I can FaceTime my 79 year old father who lives 3,000 miles away from me. He calls it the "Nose-hair Network" because of the way people hold their phone when they're talking on FaceTime.

There have been some dropped calls. Are there more than usual? It's so hard to say.

The screen is incredibly crisp. I've used the video, and emailed the videos. Will I do that often? I don't know.

Here's a little gripe. There's the "Free Bumper" program to combat the whole antenna PR debacle. But, I couldn't order it until I got the phone, because I was using a first generation iPhone that didn't support the operating system that was required for the Case Program App that one has to use to order their free case. (Sorry if that was a bit long-winded.) Anyway, now I have to wait 2 - 4 weeks to receive the case, and I actually dropped the phone in the first 24 hours. The good news... it still worked once I dropped it.

But... I DON'T CARE! I had to have it!

I am an Apple devotee. I will not change.

Sister in law has one - hates it and to add I would hate it as well - when she was here last week 50% of the time she could not get a signal and probably 75% of the time when she was using it it would drop the call and go blank - personally I would wait.

After having a couple of them in my hands (friends) I really want one. It seems to be a huge leap from the previous version. My friend in Japan is totally happy with his, and the video it takes is awesome -

And the screen - I have never seen anything like it.

I think the issue of the carrier in the U.S. (AT&T) is real - there is no way Apple doesn't make the phone available to Verizon at some point. Here in Florence they were just released on July 30th and the only model you can get is the 16 GB with contract at the moment.

Do I have comments...... hmmmmm....I am on my second iphone4. The first one kept telling me "no sim card". I could never use it. Then when we were on Virgin Gorda, it never left the air conditioning b/c it would not work anyway. I went to pick it up and it was soooo hot. It overheated never to turn on again!

Now to my second one. I cannot even use it in my house. I have to go outside to my driveway. It has horrible reception!

Right now I would take my 3G back, cracked screen and all! At least I could use it! I keep waiting for updates to correct these issues. In the meantime, I am waiting for my otterbox!

I am watching and waiting. As is our tech-geeky CAD designer.

Our business phones are Nextel/Sprint and I don't like the service for a number of reasons.

A couple months ago I got an Itouch for our STJ trip and regretted not just getting the phone. I love it and use it every day for listening to podcasts and often watch video. Our son plays with it when we go out to eat.

And then there is my Ipad lust....I went from being completely in the dark about anything remotely techy or hip to coveting the new toys.

So weird- seems there are as many different experiences as there are people. I love mine! Using it now to post from STJ. Had the 3G and this one is better- still great reception but better screen, no locking up and great camera! I'm happy with it. But geez- seems like everyone is having a vastly different experience...

I think the varied reviews are why I asked the question.

Like Lovermont I am an Apple convert and really feel like their stuff just works for me and my lifestyle.

I currently have the 16 gig 3G. I cracked the corner of the screen last January but found out that the cost to replace the screen from Apple is $199. I know there are other ways to do it but I have a warranty and it would be voided if I had it replaced any other way.

So I decided to wait since the cost of upgrading the phone when my contract was up was the same $$$. I mean to me that's a no brainer.

My thing about the case is I would just buy one outright anyway, probably before I even purchased the phone -- after all I learned the hard way that you HAVE to have it in the case all the time (especially when working out on an elliptical- just sayin') 8)

While I'm excited about the 4G the varied reviews have me worried (I'm not a big fan of just throwing money out the window no matter what I make) and make me question if I should just get the 32 Gig 3Gs which would be an upgrade and then wait until the second generation of the 4G comes out with all the bugs worked out a year or so from now. :?: :?: :?:

Decisions... Decisions..... :?

For the people with reception problems: check your settings. I wasn't getting any reception and I was ready to bring it back. My son rolled his eyes and took the phone. After about 5 seconds he handed it to me and my reception is perfect.

Chip has it and LOVES it. He has had no reception problems, no dropped calls, no issues at all.

I would stay away. the problem is where the antenna is located...right where you normally hold it.....supposedly Apple is fixing the design?

I don't have one because I detest AT&T. I wish I didn't because I used one the other day, and it is awesome. The screen has great resolution. The camera takes awesome photos. It's really sleek and lightweight.

The guy who had it is an Apple die-hard and stood in line to buy it the first day. He told me he loves it and hasn't had any reception issues. He thought it was a great upgrade from the previous version.

Seems like it's hit or miss, which generally happens with any new technology device. I might wait a little while longer to see if they work the bugs out.

I plan to wait. I think they need to work out too many kinks in the software and hardware. My 3GS, which normally is a delight, has been full of problems since I upgraded to the 4 software. Googling the issue, I see that this is a common problem that they are scrambling to work on.

Nothing in the new phone really piques my interest. If they came up with a great way to type text easily and quickly, of course, I'd be on board in a flash.
