Flying from JFK

Post by psufan »

Our trip isn't until next May so I have just started checking flights. We have taken flights out of Philly and Newark on previous trips. Today I noticed that there is a non-stop American flight out of JFK to STT. The rt price is $358 (including taxes). Anyone familiar with flights out of JFK? Is this a good price? Does American hava a habit of discontinuing non-stop flights? Just debating whether I should jump on this or wait since we have some time.

Thats the only flight I take. Its 4 hours and 10 minutes. I usually spend between 305 and 375 for the roundtrip ticket. Sometimes I mix it up and do a delta non-stop for the way back though, since it leaves later in the day from STT than the American ones. It is by far my flight of choice.

are you talking about flt 655? if so, then realize that AA uses some of their oldest equipment on that flight and the flight time changes a bit with the calendar--same flight time-different leaving time depending on the time if year (and hour here or there)
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>

We have taken this flight several times also. JFK is a bit far for us but I have to have a Direct Flight. Your price is not a bad price but it sometimes does go lower. We got a price of $300 plus taxes = $347 for the end of November. The flight is on a Boing 757 but I do not know how old it is. Never had a problem and we were always on time.

My sister takes that flight about 3 times a year - she has not had any cancellation problems. The price is pretty good. However, if you don't live in Long Island or NYC I find JFK inconvenient as the flight is so early you may want to stay in a hotel overnight preflight which could be pricey. We live in NJ and have pretty good luck on prices with the nonstop out of Newark on Continental. Less traffic getting there and the parking is less expensive in general. Just my 2 cents. Have fun planning your trip!

I think you should be fine in May but my non-stop in November was changed. They did however accommodate a change to my itinerary given the discontinuance of the non-stop and put me on a flight out of the Bradley, which is closer for me, at no extra charge. Otherwise, I've taken that non-stop several times and it's great! Yes, parking fees at JFK can be pricey but some of those stay and park options can be explored. I think I've gotten that flight just slightly cheaper. Plug the details into YAPTA and wait for a reduction or just go for it. I know many other forumites pay a whole lot more for airfare to get to STT. Happy planning. Ali~

From one PSU fan to another, we take the JFK flight most of the time. Usually stay at one of the hotels that offers the sleep, park, fly. This December we're flying non-stop out of Philly only because we're traveling with our grandaughter and thought the 10am flight would be a better choice.
We're also going back in May and probably will go out of JFK. The non-stop out of JFK always seems to have the better rate.

Ha - yeah the equipment they've run on that early morning NS route out of JFK can be old as dirt. Been delayed once due to mechanical issues, but when it does go off on time, it is real sweet to land so early in STT.

We've taken #655 5 times in May and had no problems. We are in NJ but stay overnight at the Park, fly hotel which gives you time to decompress. In the morning you pick up the shuttle and in 5 minutes you are at the terminal. We even had a frig. brought up to our room to hold our freezer bag.
We just find it less hectic than worrying about missing our flight coming from NJ on a Tues am.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I have plugged the info into Yapta to track the flight along with other flights out of Newark and Philly. It is flight 655. As of now there are no non-stop flights out of Newark or Philly. We are leaving on a Friday. If we were leaving on a Saturday we would probably have more options.

Even though flying out of JFK is a bit more of an inconvenience it may actually be a good compromise. Our daughter is joining us and she will be coming from upstate NY. She is also working in the hospitality industry so I think we will be able to get a deal on an overnight stay the night before the flight. Just need to work on the parking but she may be able to swing a deal on that too.

I only saw one hotel on the park, sleep, fly website for JFK. Are there others?

We had non-stop flights this November on AA JFK-STT and both ways got switched to stopovers. We ended up cancelling both flights (no charge since the schedule changed) and switched to Delta going down and CO coming home...using EWR which is better for us.

This seemed like a great flight since it was hard for us to get back to Philly (all flights home didn't get back till after midnite.) We were booked on that for Septemeber and just got a notification a few weeks ago that it was cancelled. They automaticaly rerouted us from JFK to BOS to MIA to STT with a 6 hour layover  (with a 3 year old). So we called and changed it to Newark to MIA and then STT. They were very nice at changing our flights for free. Maybe it just had to do with that time of year.

PS. Our flight was $278 RT which was awsome!
