I never bring a gift and I can't remember anyone every leaving one back when I was in villa management.
I get that it is a nice idea, but I am paying a bunch of money to stay there, I don't feel obligated to bring a gift. I guess if I were to rent the same villa each year directly from the owner, I may consider it, but not when I am staying there for a week and that is it.

That being said, I am staying in a unit owned by my former boss in Decemeber and I will bring something, but that is because we are friends.

It is not about obligation. It is about gratitude and good will. If you don't feel it then don't do it. Sometimes people do things for complete strangers because they feel that human connection. That is all it takes. Just think about it. For me it is fun to give. And now I have had alot of fun just sharing this thought and the possibilities.

I think it is a nice gesture, but not something that I would ever do. I am one of the most generous people I know, but I would not go out of my way to leave behind a gift in a villa that I will not return to.

I bring gifts for my on island friends, that is my connection.

Wherever we have rented a villa there has been somehting in the kitchen I can't live without so I purchase the item and leave it at the villa - I often wonder how the kitchen can be so sparse - it makes me wonder if there are people who take things from the villa that they like? we always leave food/spices and anything else we purchased on island

You know I have often thought that too, that maybe the last couple of people have taken things. And surely the owners will attest to that. Xislandgirl? You might. But there is a really great poem that says it all called "Anyway". Easy to find on the Internet. It is not between me and them "Anyway". So if you don't feel it, don't. But AHHHHHHHHHHH if you do! Do it. So good to be there anyway!!!

I once walked off with a Bacardi-imprinted mint muddler from a house in NC. I felt it was "owed" to me by the house rental Gods after I had to go buy cookware because what the house offered was such utter crap.

Our cleaners would leave behind spices and booze. anything in the fridge was thrown away, including condiments. You never know if someone left the may on the counter for 2 days and then put it back in the fridge or if someone used their finger instead of a knife
A few years ago, a forumite was arriving at the villa that we were leaving the next day. I called the management office to tell them that I would be leaving a care package for them. I put it all in a paper bag in the fridge with a large note that said to please hold for the next renter.
She arrived to no bag, she had no idea until after she returned home that I had even left it for her. I was a little angry and when I contacted the office, they said that their policy was to discard anything left behind. They never passed my message to the cleaner. You live and learn I guess.

I was told by someone who lives here that the kitchen equipment is crappy because when nice stuff is purchased for the house, it goes "missing." Things like knives, good pots, etc. So I always bring my own knives, shears, microplane, spices, etc. Of all the houses I have rented--and I think I have rented about 15 different ones--only one had a good assortment of high quality cookware and cutlery. I am sure that the owners have better stuff to use when they are here--it is probably locked in one of the owner's closets.

I do leave thngs behind but usually it's just because I don't feel like dragging it back home with me. Things like neat sheets, books, etc.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Leave the good stuff..

Post by LiamH »

We had a few villas and we overstocked them all.

1.) We left the booze at all of them.

2.) We left the pool and beach toys (we bought for the week) at the villa with the losta kiddy stuff already.

3.) We left all the Crab Mon coupons ( won at the Westin crab races) for free items on the villa fridge for the next people to enjoy.

4.) We left the free pizza coupons I had racked up from staying at B&B's so much (IE Hillcrest) for the cleaning staff.

5.) We left all of our un-open steaks and meats ( we flew in) and provisions (snacks etc) from Cost U less. ( The cleaning folks were sooooo happy when we told them about the left over foods.)

6.) Condiments galor.. we left in the cabinets..

7.) We left the huge plastic containers that we bought at Home Depot to bring over all the toys and wedding favors.. etc.. for the Villa in the garage.

8.) We even had a few guests that ended up leaving clothes in their closets becasue they did not feel like packing after a week on STJ... :) {They would be the rich cousins.. :)) We told the cleaning lady and she said they would fit her kids.

It seems that the baggage charges on AA are to the benefit of St JOhn.

Here is the challenge.

What is the BEST thing that you have ever left by accident or on purpose?

What is the WORST thing you have ever left?

I am NOT going first!

The best - 16 wine glasses from Crate and Barrel and two cases of wine. This was at a friend's beach house who wouldn't take any $.

The strangest - a travel security system (which amounted to a few sets of wireless door alarms) We rented a house on VG. The BVI agencies are delightly carefree when it comes to kids, no restrictions - your kid, your responsibility. (I have no problem with this.) I took along a system of ear-splitting alarms to set at night in case our 3 yo tried to make a break for the pool at night.

I can't think of anything weird or potentially embarassing....

Something slightly related: I date any condiments I buy. That way, you can look in the fridge and see salad dressing and know when it was bought.

Last time, we left 6 Caribs in the fridge. The people coming in after us deserved it
