New Guy - Finaly posting
Greetings to all, I have been reading ever since I finished Randy's blog about Reef Madness and subsequently booked a week there in December. You all seem like a great group. I fell in love with the rock in December of 02 and went back in 04. My wife and I swore we would make it no less than every 2 years but damned if life didn't get in the way. So 6 years late off we go. A bunch seems new and more seems the same. My question is about the development of Red Hook. As i look at the buildings on Google earth I don't remember them from 04 (could be chemically induced memory loss though). The question occurred to me.. are there grocery stores or other sundry type shops right there to stock up on before you ferry over or is it six of one half dozen of the other? Just wondering.
Hey, let me be the first to welcome you! Yes, Red Hook seemed to develop overnight. I'll leave it to others to tell you about groceries since we almost always catch the CA ferry instead and shop once we get to StJ. You can also call a service to have your villa stocked with some essentials like rum and bacon.

If you rent a jeep on STT stop before you get to Red Hook to stock up. If no vehicle get it on St John, it's not that much more $$. Red hook still has great places to eat & drink but not for rum, fruit, water, beer, eggs & bread.....Rum and water seem to cost about a buck or so more on stj............
Welcome to the forum!
Yes, there is still a grocery right at Red Hook--Marina Market. It has a good selection, but is also pricier than the other STT markets. I remember the prices being slightly cheaper than STJ, but not by much. Personally, I would just wait and stock up on St. John--there's lots of stores and you don't have to lug everything on the ferry. Unless you are renting your car on STT, I think it would be a huge hassle.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
Since we stay near Red Hook, we shop at the Marina Market all the time. One thing they have is a great bakery and excellent sandwiches. Their beer prices aren't bad either.
I'd suggest that maybe you stock up for just a couple days and then get all your other things on STJ.
The Red Hook ferry terminal is a BIG step up from the last one. If you get there early you can sit at the bar (smart move).
There are huge buildings now across from the Ferry. They don't seem to be doing well with tenants, but they look pretty nice.
Anyway...welcome to the forum and have a great time on your trip.

Hey Hart-
I'll add another "welcome" to the sandbox.
As others have said, unless you are renting your car on STT, it's easier to just buy on STJ.
I find that grocery prices at Pine Peace market on STJ are a bit better than Starfish and others. But that varies depending on what you are looking for.
Looks like we'll be on the rock around the same time in December (am I adding up those numbers right?) I know a few others are around that same time and when that happens there's usually a Forum get together that ensues.
Stay tuned!
