Kindle vs Nook

Post by Xislandgirl »

I need to get an e-reader. I love books, but I am getting sick of hauling half a dozen books with me every time we go away, and then still run out of things to read.

I have read reviews online but would love to get some real life reviews. Thanks

I did a bit of research before deciding on the Nook--for me it seemed to have superior readability and better ease of use--so far we have only found one book that we could not obtain (and i doubt it would have been available via amazon--it was a pretty obscure science text)
So i think you'd be happy with either one--but we went with the nook

I'm considering the same thing... my hesitation is that it will give me another electronic device I need to worry about securing when Im on a beach etc...

I always hated dragging reading material with me and was happy anytime we rented someplace that had books.

I've had the nook since January and really enjoy the convenience of it. I read a lot and always bought a ton of books; the ability to have them in a format that doesn't take up space is wonderful. Most of the books I want are available; I have found that it lacks on travel books however. That's a negative for me. Apparently several travel book "lines" have locked in with kindle, Rick Steve's and Lonely Planet appear to be that way.

Recently prices have dropped -there's apparently a price war between Borders (kobo?), Kindle and Nook.

Generally my only other gripe is that with all the discount coupons Borders/B&N send out, mass market paperbacks can be cheaper in original form than on the Nook. I'd think they'd be able to price those better and I don't see that the coupons can be used on ebooks purchases.

I just purchased an Ipad so am price comparing across ibooks, kindle and nook and they all seem about the same so far anyway. Good luck on your choice, either way they're a great convenience.

What do you do with your e-reader while you are at the beach? I haven't gotten one because I am worried about leaving it while I am snorkeling. I really could use one though--the books I am bringing down this time take up half my checked bag!

John said I should get the ipad if I want an e-reader. I don't know how it compares to the kindle or nook.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

I don't have any experience with a Kindle or Nook, but I'm really enjoying reading books on the iPad using the Kindle app. I also downloaded the Border's app, which actually looks a bit easier to read.
I flew next to an older gentleman a couple of months ago with a Kindle who was interested in my iPad. (He actually said to me... and I quote... "I'll show you mine if you show me yours!") The thing that really struck him was this. He was reading the NYTimes. It was all text. I opened up the NYTimes application, read the articles, scrolled through the pictures, and on some articles there were even embedded videos. I've watched movies, surfed the internet, read books, read newspapers and magazines, answered emails, and played games all on one very attractive device. Plus, sometimes I just sit it on my desk, and have a slide show of my favorite STJ photos.

I want to add two things:
1) I think the iPad is generally not considered the best solution if all you want is an e-reader, but if the other functionality is interesting to you, then I believe it's considered the top of the bunch.
2) The iPad is tough to read in bright sunlight. This may be a real consideration if you're thinking about it for beach time.

I just went through this. I bought the Nook. I LOVE it. The reasons:
1. More titles available through BN than Amazon. I believe the Nook has 1 million titles vs. Amazon's 500K. Check out the titles available with the Sony reader - I think it's a lot less.

2. The Nook has a touch pad and feels more modern than the Kindle.

3. The Nook does have a Lend feature where you can lend your books to others electronically.

I absolutely love my e-reader. It has revolutionalized reading for me. I considered the iPad, but it's a lot bulkier and the backlit screen is too hard on the eyes. Plus, if it gets stolen you are out $500 vs. $150.

My husband has the Sony e-Reader (middle version).

He hasn't complained about not being able to find books.

Husband and I aren't big snorkelers so generally we're not far from the beach/stuff so other than tucking everything under our towels/chairs we haven't worried too much.

I have an m-edge cover for the nook which keeps the sand/water off it. Though I do keep it upzipped so it won't overheat. It reads fine in the sun. Will have to see how the ipad is for that.

I like that on the ipad it recognizes my nook downloads. Since I just got the ipad last week I haven't tried to see if I can read on the nook and then if it recognizes the last page read on the ipad, not sure if it could since I don't think they sync, but it's easy enough to find where I left off.

The ipad is definitely bigger than the nook; I like being able to download several of the different ereader apps to compare.

I am a apple girl all the way, but I have a Kindle, and I really like it. Why? Well, I take the thing to the beach and I want something that I can use at the beach. The iPad is backlit, not good for bright sun at the beach. It's also expensive, too afraid to take it to the beach. Anything touch screen is out for me as well. Sunscreen, sandy hands, not good for touch screens. I have a waterproof case for the Kindle (essentially a dry bag) and the Kindle is fully functional inside of it. The bag also protects the reader from the very corrosive salty air. Although I haven't tried it out yet, they say that you can actually take it in the water. I've sat at the shoreline with it, but I haven't given it a dunk. Because I live here, I really like the idea of being able to get a book on demand. In the past, I have to order books and wait a couple of weeks to get them. I haven't run into an area where I don't have a connection...coverage is very good. The Kindle isn't as "modern", but it is far more practical for me.

My wife and I both have the Kindle, mainly because when the airlines started jacking up the price for checked luggage, we decided that it would save a lot of weight and space for us. We bought the Kindle's before the Nook really came out, so that was the deciding factor there.

I don't know how the Nook works (account wise) but I really like the fact that I registered both of our Kindles on my account, and now I buy and download books and we both can read them. In fact we are reading the same book right now. I just bought it once, but since both Kindles are on one account, we share everything I download.

I ordered the waterproof jacket (just like Stjohnjulie has, and my wife read her Kindle by the pool, and on the beach and never worried about sand, sun or water. When we went snorkeling, she just put it in the beach bag we carry, and off we went.

Either way, you are going to love the e-reader! I'm afraid printed books are going to be much like the floppy disc, 8 track tapes, and 33 1/3 rpm records. Isn't progress wonderful?? :?
