We cheated but are coming back
After going to ST John 4 years straight we decided to try Eleuthera a long skinny out island in the Bahamas. The island itself is about 100 miles long and only 2 miles wide at the greatest width. The town has numerous settlements along the way with a gas station or a store of some sort. Unfortunately a lot of garbage is thrown about giving the towns a not so nice look. We rented a beautiful house on a gorgeous crystal clear beach with some snorkeling on the reefs. The price of the house was great. The beaches are among the most beautiful I have ever seen , lighthouse beach at the southermost end is sureal , we were the only ones there for about an hour. If you saw how hard this beach is to get to you would understand. Some of the best beaches are near impossible to find and most rental cars on the island are scratched , dented and very well used!!! Now where are we going to next year, you guessed it St John . I missed the mountain scenery , the restaurants that we know, the nicely equipped grocery stores and most of all the breezes at the villa . I was so hot!!! We could not sit outside it was so hot even at 7am. On the positive side the water was probably 90. I do want to go back there, was a great place for beautiful beaches and people but the island was not beautiful in my opinion. Now a question for those of you who are still reading the last time we went to St John we stayed on Bordeaux and it was so windy the weather was terrible, May 2009.I love this location and want to try it again,is it usually a good place for those who like to sit outside, love a nice breeze or will we get blown away. We are going mid June.

We love the Bordeaux location and have stayed at several houses up there. We only had a couple of days when we had very windy conditions and even then we could go around the corner of the house to the pool area and find ourselves out of the wind. When did you go? What house did you stay at where it was so windy? I know there are is an area down in Coral Bay where it's pretty windy. We always stay up on top off Centerline and we've never had wind be an issue. How large of a house do you need and what are your dates and budget?
Did it again
Just reserved Casa Bueno for next June. Yea!!!

Sounds like to had a great time in Eluthera. I can relate to your experience.
About three years ago, Jackie & I decided to take a vacation to someplace other than STJ. We'd been to STJ enough times so that going there felt like putting on a comfy old pair of shoes.
So we took a chance on Elbow Cay in the Abacos. We had a wonderful time, in part because we were in "undiscovered country." We rented a 20' Albury to travel from one island to the other, which produced some hilarious & life-memorable moments.
Still, taking the passenger or car ferry over from STT always induces that blissful "Ahhhh"! We'll experience it again when we return to our "second home" in November.
Despite its warts, there's nothing quite like STJ.

elbow cay
We went to Elbow Cay a few years back but chickened out and did not rent a boat. My husband liked it more than I did no snorkeling from shore to speak of. Did like the golf cart way of traveling. To enjoy the Abacos I think you need to rent a boat.
