Spirit Air - be honest with me!
I just talked to the travel insurance desk for Spirit. Their policy covers the cost of the ticket up to $300 per ticket. But you have to wait for the tickets to be cancelled first obviously. Their opinion (which of course means NOTHING!) was that this strike won't / can't last long! We don't fly til the 5th of July. We're just going to sit and wait it out I guess. Good luck to all!
We are scheduled to fly wed...and of course we still dont know anything..I would feel better about it if we werent flying until July..We have decided...worse case we rebook for August and just stay longer than we had planned on this trip...I do hope the car rental and condo rental will let us reschedule without a big hassle...guess we'll see because I just cant justify paying 3G's for tickets at the last minute, I dont think the strike will last too long either...my luck..they will start back on thursday...lol

We usually check one and have one carry each...so if we use them again after August, I will just put both carry ons in the checked bag.....Infact this time I have enough clothes for 2 of us in one small carry on and I was wishing the other night I had time to send out the liquid things priority and not even plan on checking them in a bag...its not even full..but who knows...I may have more time than I had expected...but if they want to charge me for a carry on...I will just pay to check a bag and be done with it..

We were supposed to fly out tomorrow from ATL. By the time we got here (drove from Baton Rouge), all flights on Sunday were already taken. We won't fly out now until Tuesday and it's costing $1400 per person. We did have trip insurance so will get a little of that back. But we're losing a day at the villa. Ann Marie with Still Waters was great and let us move our reservation a day but she has other people checking in on the 21st. We had thought about buying refundable tickets but didn't because the cost was so high and we kept thinking Spirit would put us on a flight, no charge. The tickets we have now cost the same as the refundable ones did a few days ago. So IMHO I would suggest getting refundable tickets on another airline just in case the strike lasts a long time. If it lasts too long, I wonder if there will even be a Spirit Air anymore to use vouchers on. We are so frustrated but at least we'll be in STJ soon!

Spirit does not have interline agreements with other carriers to take their passengers when they are on strike or have weather/equipement delays. (Neither do Allegiant or Southwest for example.)
Carriers that do have those interline agreements are Delta/Continental/US Air/Alaska Air/United/American...basically what you'd consider the majors.
As the busy summer season of travel has started, most majors carriers have very little inventory to spare as it is. They are not required to transport passengers that Spirit has stranded throughout their system. It appears Spirit is doing little to nothing to help their passengers out. Spirit offering a refund is insulting at best and many travel insurance policies had clauses that didn't allow coverage for the impending strike.
Don't know what the strike is about, but feel that this on top of their decision to charge for carry-on luggage isn't going to make Spirit the carrier of choice for many travelers in the future.
I did hear that JetBlue was possibly considering adding aircraft to some of the 9 routes that they compete with Spirit on possibly as early as Monday if the strike looks like it will not be resolved. Don't know if it will happen or help anybody out, but wanted to pass that on. JetBlue will not be accepting Spirit tickets, passengers will have to buy new tickets on Jet Blue.

Hoping for a USVI ticker in 2013!

I believe how Spirit has handled the strike is reprehensible period. Spirit knew it was coming. They knew they had no agreements in place with any other carriers to accomodate the 1000's of people who they have stranded. They just lied when asked about it and they continued to lie until people showed up to the airport and found their flights cancelled. Many of these people were enticed by the $9 fare advertisements and many of them now don't have the $ to either get themselves home or continue with their orginial travel plans. I am not speaking of the posters on this thread who are in a jam either...most here who have the means to vacation on STJ can survive a setback like this without it taking their last dollar and they are not stuck in the airport without money to buy a cup of coffee. Just watched the news and some of the people who were interviewed are just plain broke and very upset. Many stuck and unable to find affordable options to get themselves where they need to be and Spirit has deserted them completely. I've never booked them personally and never booked them for clients either and I will never book them if they survive this strike.
Just read that Spirit is owned by two private equity firms and am wondering what part that plays if any in this strike.

I love how they had on their website that even if they went on strike they would continue to fly. Then the first thing they post is FLIGHTS CANCELLED! Obvious they have no desire to make sure the customers who make their salaries possible are taken care of. This is a killer ...........I hate to see airlines go out of business but continued irresponsibility is the quickest way to put yourself down!
I am not too upset about the good possibility of us not making a flight on wed. Of course I know I will be disapointed but Id rather reschedule than spend 3'G's on flights...The thing about it that makes it so bad is it was to be the kids first trip as well as my mothers. We can always reschedule but still...its not the same...as I have said...good thing is I can make our stay a little longer next time...But I have also been trying to email our "landlord" if you will while we are on Island to let him know whats going on as well as the jeep rental company and have not heard anything back from either of them. I started emailing them yesterday AM...to me thats getting just as frustrating as Spirit.

I decided not to play the "Wait-and-See" game with Spirit. My gut is telling me this crap is going to drag out well past out my flight day. I decided to just book on another airline and be done with it. So glad I did. Prices are going up fast and availability is going down fast. I think we may have grabbed the last two seats on one of our legs. I couldn't find any two seats together on any of the legs. We're all set now so a big weight is off my shoulders. I'm not about to miss 1 second of my time on STJ. Now...is it too early for a rum drink?
Im glad you are still going to get to go either way ...if we had only 2 to buy I would probably go on and buy and be done with it...But with 4...5 if you count my mom to be bought...It just makes more sense for us to "wait and see".. Maybe Spirit will get its head out of its A** and we'll see you there...17th Hole wrote:I decided not to play the "Wait-and-See" game with Spirit.
