I love my cannon powershot sd600 and i just got the underwater housing for it! I did see the olympus that is a point and shoot that is waterproof after I got this one. The pics from the olympus were very good! It is about the same price as the cannon and the underwater housing. the cannon does have an underwater setting and a view finder for sunny spots that the next version up (630 i think) does not have. it does have a bigger screen though. 3 inches instead of 2.5.

I have a Sony DSC-T100. It is a VERY small point an shoot. It's 8.1 megapixels, has 5X zoom, and has it's own underwater case and underwater filter. You can check in out on www.sonystyle.com. It's not cheap but it's a GREAT camera. I have a Cannon Rebel RL and hardly ever use it since I got his tiny little one. I will be using it underwater for the first time in 10 days so if you want to give it some time, I can show you how the underwater photos work out. I'm thinking they should be great if they're anything like the regular photos.

KY... I am a big fan od Canon cameras. I between film an digital I have five around here. They are well built, easy to use and take great pictures. There are housing for almost all of their cameras.

Now that I've said that,the new Olympus 770SW looks very interesting. It is water proof to 10 meter I think and shock proof. For snorkeling and taking on the boat and beach that would be great! Someone on the forum has one but I can't remenber who. i haven't seen any pictures from one yet, however.

Whatever you buy, get the highest resolution that you can afford. Using a viewfinder with a mask on is impossible and an a sunny day the LCD will wash out, so a lot of your underwater shots will be "point an hope". Having higher resolution leaves room to crop so you end up with a better result.

If i were buying today I would look at one of the Canon image stabilized cameras. A friend has the SD700IS and the underwater housing for it and he has taken some great pictures. It has a preset underwater shooting mode.

The SD800IS is the newer model and is higher resolution, but I don't see an underwater housing for it.

The A710IS would also be a good choice. There is an underwater housing for it and it has a preset underwater shooting mode.

If the SD800IS had an underwater housing that would probably be my choice, but since it doesn't I would go with the A710IS. (After researching the he$$ out of it, of course

I'm a big fan of the Canon Powershot series, for image quality, build, reliability, ease of use, well written manuals, many can use regular AA batteries, etc.
AND esp those models that have the grip built in (maybe a little bulkier but makes it feel more like a "real" camera to me) and those that have the "vari-angle" LCD screen that swings out and swivels (like those on most camcorders) enables way more interesting angles to take shots from, even shooting over lotsa heads at a birthday party for example. A current model that meets that is the A630 - 4x zoom adequate 95% of time, 8.0 mp more than enuff. Would have to check if there was an UW housing for it - any similar "A" series that has an UW housing could suffice.

I just wanted to let you all know that I decided to try the new Olympus 770SW. I just ordered it. It has several features that I wanted for a reasonable price. I had a tough time deciding between it and several of the Canon models. I will let you know how it does. Thanks for all of the suggestions!!
