LOST finale.... what did you think?

Post by Gromit »

While the series was frustrating and convoluted at times, I found the ending to be, on the whole, rewarding and satisfying.

Sure there were still some loose ends and questions that won't be answered (like what happened to Mr. Echo?)

But all in all LOST was an ambitious show that took us all on a pretty interesting journey and made quantum physics fun.

Unlike other series finales (read: Sopranos) I didn't feel used.

LOST was a great journey with a thoughtful ending that honored both the story and its viewers IMHO.

What did you think?

At 11:23, I thought to myself:
They're doing a wonderful job wrapping up this present. It looks really nicely wrapped. However, it's not the gift I asked for. but, it's a nicely wrapped gift, so I'll take it and be happy.

11:24: I'm sitting on the couch, with my mouth agape.
11:30: Same thing

I wandered upstairs at 11:40 and went to bed. I was in a daze.

I'm re-watching tonight with the wife. It should make more sense.

I guess it made sense, but it was not what I expected (and damn me for not knowing better than to try to figure them out). the ending left me feeling a little empty.

but, they did a nice job. There's no need for a movie or anything.

though...a buddy Film about Ben and Hurley could be fantastic

Pip-- I was thinking that they could do a "fantasy island" of sorts with Hurley as Mr. Roarke and Ben as Tattoo and cover the missing years on the island

Kidding!!

My take: All of the flash sideways during season 6-- they were all dead and living out the lives they wanted to live had the plane not crashed in the place in between life and death.

Some have posited that they were in purgatory (or something like it) the entire time. I disagree.

They all eventually died in their own time and it was up to them (thanks to Desmond and others) to help people realize that. Once they did they were at peace. Their individual flashes reiterate what was REAL and really happened. To me that's the best clue. IOW I don't think they would remember what was a fantasy to begin with. So if they saw it (and they usually did including their actual deaths in some cases) then that was real.

There's a lot of Schrodingers Cat quantum physics coolness going on throughout.

I really liked how peaceful everyone was and how happy they were to evetually find and be reunited with the people they loved most.

I thought it was AMAZING! I am so glad that I had arranged to have today off from work. I had people over for a finale party and we stayed up talking about the episode until 3 AM! I cried at least four times. I thought it was about as perfect as you could hope for....there was no way to wrap up every single loose end.

Question regarding the series. We have not watched it AT ALL. Do you recommend renting and watching the entire thing, especially after watching the finale?

Ugh!! I have followed this show religiously since the very first episode. I moderate a forum dedicated to all things LOST. I had a huge party with some of my friends over and we all got a chance to talk and then theorize more today.

The finale was great but there is a huge sticking point with me. Damon and Carlton have said since season 1 that the island was not purgatory. Well no, the island ended up being real, the flashsideways in the last season ended up being purgatory. Nice word play on their part. For the last 5 years I have told myself over and over, it has nothing to do with purgatory or anything like that. When Jack realized he was dead, that they were all dead, I flipped out. I still cant believe they went that route, which apparently they had planned all along, and when people figured it out in season 1 they lied to everyone to keep them guessing and watching for 5 more years. (end rant)

Gromit, as far as people thinking they were in purg the whole time, its just not possible. Follow me for a second. If they all died on impact then where does Juliet fit into this whole equation? She wasn't on the plane so Sawyer had never met her before he supposedly died when the plane crashed. He never met her, he couldn't fall in love with her, he couldn't find her in the sideways flash/purgatory/whatever. Does that make sense? They were real, just like Christian said, "Everyone in the church is real". So my point is I totally agree with you! lol

With all that said, if you are thinking of watching the series then you should. There has and never will be another show like it. Simply amazing. So much emotion and the score is beautiful.

I loved it.

I laughed. I cried- like a baby at times (Jin & Sun remembering during the ultrasound with Juliet, Sawyer & Juliet at the candy machine). I forgave all the lame filler episodes, the dead end story lines, Walt growing 2 feet in 1 year. I don't care about all the questions or theories anymore. I was totally invested in the adventures, journeys, challenges, changes and character arcs of all the characters and it was really, really nice to see them all together again- relieved and happy- even if they were dead. It's a LOST happy ending.

I'm going to miss all those characters. They were so wonderfully written and then developed- so flawed and wonderful.

I still don't 100% buy the light and there are a lot of puzzle pieces that were left on the board but here is what I think (today, it changes)-

The island is a stage where all the great battles and debates take place- love & loss, life & death, light & dark, good & evil, who are we, WHY are we, where dow e come from.

It was really quite an adventure and an exciting ride.

@Elle-- I agree about the purgatory thing completely and you and I are on the same page about people believing they were in purg the whole time-- cause they weren't. I think people need to watch it again and they'll get it.

@djmom- it is certainly not necessary that you watch the entire series to appreciate the finale.

In my mind the finale is a stand alone peice of work in many ways.

However, I think that LOST is worth the journey and the investment in the characters is certainly worthwhile.

Perhaps knowing the ending will allow you to enjoy each episode for what they were not what they will be or where they were trying to lead you in the process of the storyline.

Been following Lost since the first episode and look forward to going back to the first episode and taking my time watching all of them.

Did anybody watch the aftershow with Jimmy Kimmel?? So funny. I really thought they were going to show the 2 other "maybe" endings, only to find out they were Jimmy's idea. It was great, very funny.

djmom I would watch the show on dvr, definitely. John and i only started watching LOST about a year ago--we bought all the DVDs and plowed through it. I think maybe because I had not been waiting every week for years for a new episode I was more able to forgive the odd plot lapses, and I never read any of the producers comments, so only had my own theories.

I really like waiting until stuff comes out on dvd before starting a series. We watched all of Alias that way, and the first season of 24 (which we then dumped like a hot potato!), Entourage, and a couple of others. I think the Sopranos is the only TV show we watched in real time. We are getting the True Blood dvds next.

The first alt-ending was the best one.

My sister found this online and I thought it had some good insight on the finale:

First, the island was not purgatory and the people on it were not dead. The whole point of their final meeting in the sideways world/purgatory is that the survivors of the island/Oceanic flight waited for each other, even after death, to be together to move on together. They did so because the greatest things they had ever done in their lives, the strongest bonds they formed, were on the island.

What was the island? The island was life - a realm full of mystery where there are no clear answers, where there are rules but they sometime seem arbitrary, where the answers to the mysteries are always only speculative. In the end, Lost was an allegory about life -there are mysteries, but no answers. Or very few. What is important is how we deal with the choices we need to make and how we deal with the larger forces that shape our lives.

The creators decision not to answer questions fits into this allegorical understanding. But, in a creative sense, it is also the wisest course of action. The answers they could have given would only disappoint. Let the show finish with its many mysteries intact. They don't matter. They just draw attention to the real mysteries of our own lives.

The various reunions were beautiful. The idea of these people waiting for each other even after death is sad, poignant and touching. The sad story of Ben, who decides to stay behind and work out some of his own questions, forever an outsider, adds melancholy. But the "happy ending" is well-deserved and fitting. And, it makes sense.
