Am I the only one?

Post by MIke »

Driving to Atlanta tomorrrow to catch Wednesday morning flight to St John.Am I the only one that drives extra careful the whole week before, prays that everyone stays healthy, including distant relatives and friends, worries that people show up to work, that all the airlines keep their act together and in general worry myself sick until wheels down on ST Thomas?
I think that is why I love St John so much.
No worries.

We leave in 3 wks and I was just thinking about that this morning. I hope everyone stays healthy and happy. I dont believe it's actually going to happen until, like you said, we land in STT.

I have flown A LOT in my life time.

And now all of a sudden I've started freaking out about flying on an airplane. I'm afraid that the plane will crash...and that has to be one of the very worst ways to go. So now I'm kind of scared to fly into STT even though we've done it 8 times without any problems. There was a flight into STT a few years ago and this woman screamed during some turbulence and it made the rest of the flight a whole lot more difficult. I have been in much worse turbulence in Asia multiple times, but when people start screaming on a plane it really changes the mood of the flight.

Hubby and I always joke every trip that we'd be pissed if the plane crashed on the way TO STJ, but on the way home is fine....

Let me qualify that by saying that we have no kids and my Mom would be happy to take the dog.

Ativan - It is my wonder drug for flying.

Your story is similar with what happened to us. We both had plenty of passenger time under our belts before and after we met.

It started first with my husband. We were on a flight from FL that SHOOK the entire time. We had been on plenty of small plane (like 8 seaters) that were rocky and rolly but that day it felt different. It was awful. Then 9-11 and then, the final straw, we had a child.

We have a close friend that flies several times a week, both commercially and on private jets. He has been doing this since graduating college. He said it hit him overnight when he was about 40 years old, an anxiety that came out of nowhere.

My doc says he writes lots and lots of rxs for flying issues.

I also read somewhere that as we age, the structures of the inner ear change and we become much, much more sensitive to motion, which may add to the level of discomfort.

For me, ativan takes enough of the edge off so I can keep my feelings in check. It does not make me feel at all dopey or drugged.

I am so with you! In the past month and a half we have had 4 family members in the hospital and this past weekend I had started to feel off. I have been trying to boost my immune system with airborne and have prayed and promised lots if we can just make it throught our 10 days without a hitch. You are not alone. I am kinda glad to find I am not either. Maybe we will see ya down there and toast to our good fortune! Have a safe trip!

I get so stressed - my husband has some real health issues and I put him in quarantine about 6 weeks before our trip - and Ativan is the way to go - I hand them out to everyone in the group (except me) and then I have a relaxing trip - just kidding if any law enforcement is out there!

Once I'm in the air, I'm fine, but airports are a PITA for sure. I hate the whole experience of getting there so darn early, putting up with moron security people. (They are so bad in Houston.) Waiting at the gate for a flight that is almost never on time anymore, and then having that "fun" Miami connection, which can be another nightmare without a good drink or two. Our Miami connections seems to always be about 2 miles from one gate to the connection, even though it's the same airline. I don't get that. It's just not a fun day....but going home is 10 times worse. I've just convinced myself I need 2 weeks to make it worth the hassle. :D

I do like Adavan though. Great for stress, but my Dr. is a hard a$$ and won't give it to me unless I have a "real" crisis. I'm thankful to not have any of those at the moment.

I think Ive been more stressed this trip probably because we are bringing the kids..and my mom...so I think...crap...what if one of the kids get sick or hurt just before we go.. (Im thinking I may forbid them to leave their rooms til we leave) LOL . And what if something happens to the car on the way to the airport and we miss the plane? We drive about 2 hrs to get to the airport. All kinds of what if's. Im not usually this stressed when we travel, dont know whats up with it unless its because there are 5 of us this time instead of 2.. Initially it was only 2 of us when we planned the trip.
