Dolphins on Tortola?

Post by BRY1105 »

For anyone who has personally been to Dolphin Discovery on Tortola, is it something you'd recommend. Ive read up how its not good for dolphins to be in captivity, but how is it any different than animals in an aquarium or zoo? Just looking for some opinions because Im trying to decide if its something I will want to do.

Personally, I do not recommend it. The place is not all that clean, and they do not treat the dolphins as they should. These animals are not meant to be in such close quarters, perform on demand, be swum on by the tourist. The differnce IMO between Dolphins at Dolphin Discovery and marine life in an aquarium is the animals in the aquarium are basically placed in their natural habitat and most of the time people are allowed to only look....not touch. Like I said....this is all just MO.

If you have never swum with dolphins, and this is your only opportunity to do it, then I suppose that it is better than nothing. At the same time, I have swum with dolphons in Tortola, in the Bahamas, and at Discovery Cove. Of the three, this is the one I would say to avoid, and try to go to one of the others. The areas where you do the swim are relatively small, not particularly well kept, and it was not nearly the experience it should be. Of the three places, I would definitely do the Bahamas again. It was the best overall experience - for us, and I think, for the dolphins.

Keep Smiling!!! :)

Thanks for the info. I don't think I'll go to Tortola to see the dolphins. Ive already got a snorkeling daysail scheduled with FlyGirl, so I'll just have to keep my eyes open.
