I agree that it depends on your relationship to the person, at least when it comes to graduation gifts.

For weddings, we usually spend about $200 or a bit more. I always thought it was good to spend on a gift about what the wedding cost per guest, times 2 since it's both DH and me. That's tough because depending on the area, weddings cost well over $100/person. ($125/person was about average in Chicago when I got married and that was 17 years ago. And that was with negotiations, since we paid for it ourselves. I imagine now it's much more.) Also, some weddings are more extravagant and some more simple, and it seems weird to base the gift on the type of wedding... so what to do?

So based on how much weddings cost, I can't imagine that many people get invited just so the couple gets a gift from them (unless they think the people will send a gift and not attend?)

We're kind of in between ages for weddings right now. Our friends are mostly all married, and most of their kids are not yet old enough. I suppose I should brace myself for the next generation of weddings in about 10 years!
