Thanks to all for the warm welcome. It is taking me a little time to learn the forum concept. rpplano has been coaching me from his island vacation. Here is my question: We are a family of 6 adults wanting to head to St. Johns sometime between now and the end of October. When is the best time to come? I understand some places close down during part of the year. Also, I need to find a house or some suitable accomodation with 3 to 4 bedrooms (or maybe a hammock on a sleeping porch). Where is the best place to look that is reasonable? Much as I would love to book into a $6,000 a week property, I think DH would keel over! Thanks for your help. Lolli

Welcome Lolli! check out www.sapphirebreeze.com and www.adantebythesea.com we have been visiting STJ the end of October for the past 3 years and will be returning again this year. Halloween is a "hoot", the weather has treated us very well each year and the beaches are less crowded. Good luck with your planning.

Once again, welcome Lollie. You will find that the information is top notch. The people are good people and the patron saint of this forum is -- or should be -- St. Smart Alec. 
As far a where to stay, it seems that there are three basic zones on the island where people rent villas. The first is Cruz Bay. It is closest to the ferry docks. Most of the restaurants, bars and shopping are in this area. The second area is Coral Bay. This is a quieter area with fewer people. There are a half a dozen good places to eat and drink. It is close to the North Shore and east end beaches. Coral Bay is my "One Particular Harbour" that Jimmy Buffett sings about. The third area is the middle of the island. They are more or less midway between the two bays. Some like to be close to the Cruz Bay nightlife and be able to walk home after a few adult beverages. Others like the quieter life of Coral Bay. You have to determine what your dream vacation looks like.
We prefer the shoulder seasons -- those immediately before and after the high season of Thanksgiving to Mid April or the First of May. This year we are going the last two weeks of May and SOTB usually goes the first week of November. I have been told that some businesses close down in September and October. That is also the middle of the huricaine season.
The best place to start looking at villas would be the villa rental agency web sites. You can see photos, their locations, rates and other factors. Although I have never used any of the agencies, here are some of the sites in no particular order.

You will find $6,000 villas if you want and you will find some for $3,000.00. There are other villas that are independently owned and rented. You will find some of them in reviews or other threads. One that I have not used but comes with high recommendations is Sunnyledge.
Before you settle on a date or a place, the six of you should agree on how the vacation will be managed. Our own RickG came up with the ultimate (IMHO) list of the rules to govern a trip. If you would like to review those rules check out the following link.
