Car Rental on STT ?
Car Rental on STT ?
We have just planned on getting a car for a few days while we are there on STJ. However since there will now be 4 of us now instead of 2, we are weighing the costs of Taxi fares and ferry fares for 4 or just getting a rental on STT and taking it on the barge. Im sure it would make sense to stop at Cost-U-less for food. And if I did that, It would eliminate bringing as much food as we had originally planned on checking a bag with dry goods. Anyone have any input on this...and can anyone recommend a dealer on STT for this?
Thanks !!!!
Thanks !!!!

Hello, this past March we rented from Dependable on St. Thomas and use the Car Barge (ferry). We also stopped at Cost U Less. There was a very nice discount from Dependable (look on-line). We saved a nice chunk of change (there were 7 of us, two vehicles), by renting on STT. The Dependable folks are very nice. Not all rental agencies on STT allow you to take their vehicles to STJ - need to check that out first and also - you need to land in time to get your vehicle to get on the car ferry. I believe the last one to STJ is either 6 or 7 PM. Cost U less is great - let me know if you have any questions about what they have in the store. I'll be glad to help!

We have always rented our car on STJ and would recommend L&L Jeep Rental. Make sure you get a Jeep or similar car with 4WD. Many of the rentals on STT turn out to be regular cars which can be tricky on the hills in STJ. Advantage on renting on STJ, is if you have car trouble the folks you are dealing with are right there. You also have much more in the way of ferry options if you don't take a car. Yes, food prices are high on STJ - figure about 40% more than the States but if you factor in the hassle of packing/paying luggage fees and the 'planning' on bringing stuff with you, not sure how much you really save in the end. Also, some of the villas are stocked with basic essentials such us popular spices, salt, pepper, olive oil etc so you may want to check out the kitchen before buying/bringing these items.
We used Dependable in 2008 and using them again next week. Call them for reservations...the web/email option is slow but if you call they will take care of you. They pick you up at the airport, take you 5 mins to their office fill out paperwork and them you are on your way...works for us...

Thanks everyone...I have emailed Dependable and will see what they have to say...We have always rented on STJ from Conrads when on STJ and ferry just us over..We are staying at Cinnamon Bay this time and hadnt planned on getting one at all, The kids then decided they wanted to come to STJ instead of a cruise this yr. So I only reserved a jeep for a cpl days..However, when I figured in Ferry costs and taxi fares for 4..plus trying to check a bag ...might be cheaper to rent on STT and ferry it over...

I also recommend Amalie. Super service and we got a very nice Jeep that wa brna new back in December. The owners make the booking process very simple, meet you when you come off the plane and meet you at your airport check in terminal upon return so the entire experience is about as smooth as you can get.
